Emma Stone Surprises Crowd at Screening for Silent Film Bleat: ‘If I Never Had to Talk Again, I’d be Thrilled’

Emma Stone surprised the crowd when she appeared at the New York Film Festival (NYFF) on Wednesday.

The actress, 34, attended the premiere of the film directed by Yorgos Lanthimos Bleat at the Alice Tully Lincoln Center hall in New York, where she called the 30-minute silent film a dream come true.

“If I never had to talk again, I’d be thrilled,” she said during a Q&A moderated by the festival’s artistic director, Dennis Lin. Diversity reported. “And so would many other people.”

She explained: “I’m serious. My favorite thing is that I don’t have to speak. I want often [that] we could cut a lot of lines of dialogue because I think people can say a lot more without speaking.”

Bleatin which Stone plays a grieving woman opposite Damien Bonnard, marks the third time the actress has worked with Lanthimos, 50, since their first collaboration in 2018. Favorite.

Their second project is Poor people, which was shown at NYFF the day before. There, Lanthimos was able to talk about the feature film, but Stone could not amid the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike. However, Diversity reported that Bleat she secured an interim agreement with the union, which allowed her to speak with the director about the short during a festival screening and Q&A.

According to the outlet, Stone apologized for feeling “pretty nervous” during the conversation, acknowledging how long it had been since she’d been in the spotlight. “I haven’t done this in a while. I’m sorry!” she said.

About working together again, the pair joked that Lanthimos’ projects, incl Lobster and The Killing of a Sacred Deeralways explore themes related to sex, death and goats — and Bleat is no exception.

“It’s, like, non-stop, every day. He calls me and says: ‘Goats – what do you think? Death?’ I said, ‘Okay, still? We recorded this three years ago,’ said Stone, per Diversity.

Located on the Greek island of Tenos, Bleat follows a grieving woman inside a simple house, where “reality merges with dreamy imagination and tradition with insidious desires,” according to IMDb.

Although they didn’t talk about their second film, Poor peopleLanthimos spoke about Stone’s character in the graphic, fantasy thriller at the Venice International Film Festival premiere and NYFF screening.

“It was very important to me not to make a film that would be modest, because it would completely betray the main character. So we had to be sure,” said the director in Italy. “Character [had to] there’s no shame, and Emma didn’t have to be ashamed of her body, nudity and getting into those scenes, and she realized that right away.”

As PEOPLE previously reported, Poor people it’s based on Alasdair Gray’s 1992 novel of the same name. And while the film contains a few unremarkably graphic sex scenes, Lanthimos praised Stone’s ability to tackle her character’s sexuality without inhibitions.

“There was a script but, especially for the sex scenes, we sat down with Emma and decided, ‘So what position should we do here, what should we do there, what’s missing? You know from the experience of sex and the different desires that people have, what we need to show to make this complete and to make it a sufficient representation of human desire and its idiosyncrasies, and all those things,’ he said.

The crew also hired intimacy coordinators to ensure a safe and comfortable environment for Stone and her colleagues. “She made everyone feel very comfortable,” Lanthimos said of one of the intimacy coordinators, Elle McAlpine.
