England captain Owen Farrell becomes first Rugby World Cup player ever to suffer humiliating punishment

England captain Owen Farrell went down and became the first player at the World Cup to take a time-out after a penalty.

The rule was not introduced until January 1, 2023 as rugby tries to reduce time wastage.

England won a penalty in the 63rd minute with the score 11-17 to Samoa.

But Farrell took a ridiculously long time to take the penalty and became the first player to be penalized under the new shot clock rule at the World Cup.

Fans at the Stade Pierre Mauroy were left confused by the incident.

And fans on Twitter pretty much slammed Farrell’s mistake.

One fan wrote: “It might not actually be better than sitting in a stadium full of Irish and Scots while Owen Farrell, in the middle of losing to Samoa, lets the clock run out on a penalty.”

Another attached a picture of a smiling fan in the stands with the caption: “Perfect reaction to Owen Farrell’s strike”.

A third was frustrated with Farrell from an England supporter’s perspective and wrote: “Owen Farrell’s arrogance is draining the life out of this England team.”

A fourth added: “Seeing Owen Farrell face any form of trouble” alongside a picture of Kylian Mbappe laughing hysterically.

Despite the embarrassing mistake, it wasn’t all bad for Farrell.

The fly-half broke England legend Johnny Wilkinson’s all-time scoring record in England.

Farrell was ruled out of England’s opening two matches against Argentina and Japan but returned for the Red and Whites’ comprehensive victory over Chile.

Farrell kicked eight conversions as part of the hitting.

England won 18-17 against Samoa as part of a disappointing performance.
