The England footballer has been released from hospital and will be recovering at home after suffering a cardiac arrest during a game last Saturday.
Luton Football Club announced this morning that the player, Tom Lockyer, was discharged from hospital on Wednesday.
“We are pleased to report that our captain Tom Lockyer has now begun a period of rehabilitation from the comfort of his own home after being released from hospital on Wednesday,” the team said in a statement. “This encouraging news follows a successful procedure on Tuesday where Tom was fitted with an ICD (implantable cardioverter defibrillator) device to prevent a repeat of Saturday’s incident.”
The terrifying moment happened midway through Luton’s game against Bournemouth last weekend. Video from the match broadcast showed Lockyer suddenly collapsing to his knees and then eventually falling face-first onto the pitch around the 60th minute of the match, prompting players from both teams to rush to his aid.

“The club, Tom and the Lockyer family would like to take this opportunity to reiterate our collective heartfelt thanks to everyone at Bournemouth, their supporters, club officials and in particular their medical staff and midfielder Philip Billing, who was the first to come to Tom on the throw and call for help, ” reads Luton’s statement this week.

Billing immediately waved to the touchline for help after running to Lockyer, Luton’s team captain. Lockyer once collapsed during a game last May when he suffered atrial fibrillation, according to the Associated Press.
“The clinical advice that Tom and the club have undertaken since the Championship play-off final has been carried out by the most respected cardiologists, who have been involved every step of the way, along with a team of supporting multidisciplinary consultants,” the team said. “We can now confirm that tests carried out this week have revealed that the problem Tom experienced on Saturday was different to the atrial fibrillation he suffered in May.”

Luton did not say whether Lockyer was expected to return to the squad at any point this season, but added that the organization was “so proud to have Lockyer as our captain and his leadership will continue on the sidelines where his bravery will inspire his team – colleagues, colleagues and fans, starting from Saturday.”
“Tom, his family and the club would like to thank everyone in the football family who have sent messages of care and love,” Luton’s statement added. “The level of support has been overwhelming.”
The next team plays Newcastle on Saturday at 15:00 GMT.
