Eric McCormack’s Wife Janet Leigh Files for Divorce After 26 Years of Marriage

Eric McCormack and Janet Leigh Holden McCormack resign.

The Will and Grace star, 60, and director are divorcing after more than 26 years of marriage, according to court documents obtained by PEOPLE.

Janet, who filed for divorce citing “irreconcilable differences,” is seeking spousal support and is asking the court to terminate Eric’s ability to receive spousal support.

She did not specify a separation date in the divorce petition, which was filed the day before Thanksgiving in Los Angeles County Superior Court. TMZ first broke the news.

Representatives for both Eric and Janet did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment. Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE’s free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

The former couple first met in 1994 on the set of the CBS TV series Lonesome Dove. At the time, Janet was assistant director and Eric was playing Colonel Francis Clay Mosby.

The couple then married in August 1997, and five years later had their only child, son Finnigan Holden McCormack.

Back in April 2020, Eric shared a photo of himself and Janet in 1994 Lonesome Dove wrap party, which marked their first official photo together.

He captioned it, “This is the first picture Janet and I took at the #LonesomeDove Season 1 Wrap Party, circa December ’94. This happened to be our ‘coming out’ party. No one on the show knew we’d been dating for months.🤯.”

During the interview with Guard In 2007, under the title “What I Know About Women,” Eric shared tidbits about his relationship with Janet.

“I met my wife Janet in 1994 while filming a TV series. She was an assistant director. I was just getting out of a relationship and I couldn’t be trusted,” he wrote. “I’ve dated actresses, but Janet was different. She wore jeans, she drove a pickup truck.”

Eric continued: “At first she wasn’t too keen. She knew that actors are a lot of work: it would be like taking your work home with you.”

“But I managed to convince her. We had a secret affair in the first season. I mean, the dating team! In fact, it was much worse for her, because she should not have given preferential treatment to any of the actors,” added the actor.
