Anna ‘Chickadee’ Cardwell, Oldest Daughter of Mama June Shannon, Dead at 29: ‘She Is No Longer with Us’

Anna “Chickadee” Cardwell, eldest daughter of reality TV star Mama June Shannon, has died. She was 29 years old.

Shannon, 44, announced the news of Cardwell’s death in a post she shared on Instagram on Sunday.

“It is with broken hearts that we announce that @annamarie35 is no longer with us,” she captioned her post alongside a family photo. “She passed away peacefully in my home last night at 11.12 pm.”

“She put up a hell of a fight for 10 months and she died with her family around her like she won’t and we’ll update you with more information as soon as we get it today,” Shannon continued.

“We love you all and continue to offer prayers and thoughts for our family as they go through this difficult time,” she concluded.

Cardwell’s death comes after Shannon shared a plea on Instagram on Friday, asking followers to keep her family in their thoughts.

Cardwell — who appeared alongside her mom and sister Alana “Honey Boo Boo” Thompson in the TLC movie Little children and tiaras and later, Here comes Honey Boo Boo — was diagnosed with stage 4 adrenal cancer in January and was undergoing treatment at that time.

“We are all asking for prayers for our family as we go through this process, we really appreciate all the thoughts and prayers and will let you know when we can just know all your thoughts and prayers are greatly appreciated at this time,” she wrote Shannon said in her post, adding the hashtag “#CancerSucks.”

Cardwell was diagnosed with lung, liver and kidney cancer by doctors following a series of tests after she complained of stomach pains. In March, she underwent the first round of chemotherapy.

Cardwell broke the news about her treatment in an Instagram post on May 10, sharing that she is in the middle of her third round of chemotherapy.

“This one [was] yesterday,” she wrote along with a photo of herself and her boyfriend Eldridge Toney. “It was a pretty good day but it got a little off and Cracker Barrel was good going down but not up 😂 but all in all it’s going well and the chemo is working we come to find so to make things look good.”

Earlier that month, Shannon revealed to PEOPLE that she was feeling “emotionally drained” by her daughter’s illness.

“I’m not going live [on TikTok] a lot because of Anna. I’m already emotionally exhausted because of it,” she explained at the time. “I’m not mean with emotions… I’m not mean mentally [or] emotionally ready to deal with 5,000 people asking me about Anna that day.”

Of Cardwell’s cancer diagnosis, she added: “You don’t know if you should scream. You don’t know if you should laugh. You don’t know if you should shout. You don’t know who to blame.”

Shannon also revealed to PEOPLE that she and her husband, Justin Stroud, are in the process of leaving Alabama to move to her native Georgia, allowing her to be by Cardwell’s side and help her through treatment.

“Right now I’m a proud mom,” she wrote in a post on Facebook, sharing photos and a video clip from the big day.

“I can’t believe I’m going to have a middle schooler and a sophomore,” she continued. “Give me a minute while I go cry my eyes out. I’m so proud of my girls and all they’ve accomplished.”

Cardwell and her own mother have faced some ups and downs in their relationship over the years. In 2003, Cardwell moved out of Shannon’s house and moved in with her grandmother. She returned home in 2012 ahead of the premiere of the family spinoff Here comes Honey Boo Boo, which was canceled by TLC in 2014 due to reports that Shannon was romantically involved with ex-boyfriend and convicted sex offender Mark McDaniel.

Soon after, Cardwell said McDaniel sexually assaulted her when she was 8 years old. McDaniel was dating her mother at the time. A source told PEOPLE in 2014 that Cardwell moved out of Shannon’s home after being abused.

In an interview with PEOPLE at the time, Cardwell spoke about the abuse she experienced as a child, at the hands of McDaniel, and how she and her mom worked to repair their relationship in the years since.

“Mom and I realized we had to put this behind us and get our relationship back on track and we did that and that’s what we’re doing,” she explained.

Still, she added that she would be “hurt” if her mom was indeed dating McDaniel again.

“I would feel hurt. I wouldn’t feel betrayed, but I would feel hurt. You know that the past should be in the past and should stay in the past and not come back,” she said.

Although the pair have remained largely estranged in the years since – Cardwell sued her mother in 2015 for allegedly unpaid appearances in Here comes Honey Boo Boo — reunited earlier this year when Shannon married Stroud in February 2023.

The occasion was celebrated with all four of her daughters – Cardwell, Efird, Alana and Jessica “Chubbs” Shannon – by her side.

“This was the first time the whole family was together since 2014,” Shannon told PEOPLE. “It was really special to get married in a place where my family and I have so many memories!”

Cardwell is survived by daughters Kaitlyn Elizabeth and Kylee Madison.
