Eric Stonestreet and his fiancee, Lindsay Schweitzer, have prioritized building their dream home in Kansas City, Kansas, before they tie the knot.
However, their dream home will not include the spaces that some owners expect, including a dining room and an office.
In a recent chat with PEOPLE, Stonestreet, 53, talked about his new partnership with Kidde’s new collection of smart smoke and combination (smoke + CO) alarms with the Ring app and building security features into his new home. The two-time Emmy winner, 53, revealed that he had “always wanted” to build his dream home and that he and Schweitzer “absolutely integrated” the new technology into the home.
The new product monitors and alerts residents to carbon monoxide levels, and Ring technology lets users know wherever they are. “What I really like is that if I’m away and Lindsay is home, I’ll get a notification that the levels have reached a level that we need to address,” Modern family said the star.

Although the couple had a long-distance relationship as Stonestreet concluded Modern family in Los Angeles, told PEOPLE he’s ready to return to his hometown of Kansas City after years on the West Coast. “Then this piece of property became available and we started coming up with what we wanted because we knew we were going to do it at some point, so we really thought about it,” he explained.
“We don’t have a dining room. I have a dining room in LA and I can’t tell you how many meals I’ve had in my dining room,” he admitted. “So I said, ‘There’s no dining room.'” He mentioned that he also “doesn’t need a home office,” explaining that his cell phone is his home office. “I don’t have to sit at a desk and type,” the actor continued.
The Secret Life of Pets the actor also wanted to include a window in his shower because his favorite garden apartment in Chicago had that feature. “Nothing beats the cool air of Lake Michigan coming in through that window, and me being in a warm, hot shower is a sensational feeling.”

“And I said, ‘I want a window in my shower.’ I’ve never been able to design my own house, and I’m designing it. ‘I want a window in our shower,’ he said before noting that he and Schweitzer were in sync while building the home.
Although he admitted that there may be things on which they do not agree, but “they find a compromise”.
“There are definitely things that I don’t care about, and she absolutely does,” Stonestreet explained. “So we’re all very good with each other, finding these things and just talking about them and doing what everyone wants and finding joy and beauty in those things.”

Stonestreet also confirmed that they have ensured that they have “really designated spaces for themselves.”
“I knew I wanted my own space to watch TV,” he said before noting that, of course, other people were invited into that space. “Lindsay has a little space where she can read and have a cup of coffee.”
He said Schweitzer’s twin boys “have their own space where they can play and wrestle,” adding, “We don’t bother each other, but we can all be together when we want to be together.”

They factored in hosting their friends and family, as well as Stonestreet’s on-screen family.
“We wanted to create spaces where we could call Jesse Tyler Ferguson home,” Stonestreet told PEOPLE. “We wanted to create spaces where, if Sofia [Vergara] coming through Kansas City, that we have a great place for her.”
