Erin Napier Says Her Kids Won’t Have Social Media Until After High School: ‘It’s Not What They Need’ (Exclusive)
In February, Erin spoke with PEOPLE about her organization, Osprey (Old-school parents raise engaged youth), which focuses on uniting families who pledge to live a screen- and social-media-free childhood until they graduate from high school.
“For us, it’s less about what we don’t want them to use and more about what we want them to do with the adolescence they’re going to be given,” Erin said of her daughters.
“Our oldest is only 6 years old, but she has been going to ballet school for three years. She loves it and when she hangs out with her older cousins - who are 10, 11 years old – she becomes a little shy. She feels like a little child.”
“Around Christmas, we noticed a very nice thing happen,” the mom of two continued. “Nutcracker the soundtrack came on and she began to perform her ballet for the recital she was preparing for. And the big girls said, ‘Wow Helen, that’s so cool.’ She suddenly gained so much confidence because she had that skill.”
It’s situations like these that make Erin feel better about the decision she and Ben made for their family.
“I feel like when our kids have more opportunities to engage in the real world and learn skills and find their talents, that’s where confidence comes from. And the opposite of finding confidence is in social media. Anything that destroys our confidence and self-esteem lives there,” she explained. .
“We really want to focus on helping our girls find their gifts in the real world, and when they’re older, much older, I think they’re going to be mentally prepared for what social media is and the tool it can be.”
