Esther Rantzen was born on June 22, 1940 to Katherine Flora (née Leverson, 1911-2005) and Henry Barnat Rantzen (1902-1992). She is from Berkhamsted in the English county of Hertfordshire. Her parents are Jewish. Priscilla N. Taylor, her younger sister, was her only sibling.
Her great-great-grandfather immigrated to Britain in the late 1850s and settled in Spitalfields as a hat maker. Her great-grandfather moved to a more comfortable neighborhood with the help of his brother-in-law, diamond merchant Barney Barnat (born Barnett Isaacs), who had become extremely wealthy in South Africa.
She attended Buckley Country Day School in New York and graduated in 1950. Esther then attended North London Collegiate School in Edgware, North London, an independent all-girls school. She also studied English at Somerville College, Oxford. She was a member of the Oxford University Dramatic Society (OUDS), the Experimental Theater Club (ETC) and the Oxford Theater Group, performing in Oxford and Edinburgh.
