- During the ICC Women’s World T20 in 2018, she was embroiled in a controversy with the cricket management over her attitude towards the game. In her letter to BCCI, Mithali accused Ramesh Powar and BCCI COA member Diana Edulji of being biased against her by not including her in the T20 World Cup semi-finals. In response, Ramesh criticized her and said she threatened to quit cricket when asked to tone down the batting order. He added, “Despite being a senior member of the team, her input into team meetings was minimal. She was unable to understand and adapt to team plans. - Mitali’s mother Lila believes that Mitali’s entry into cricket was a complete coincidence. When she grew up, she followed her brother Mithun and did what he once did. Soon, she became interested in cricket when she accompanied her brother to the 6 am coaching session at St. John’s Cricket Academy in Secunderabad.
- While Mithun practiced with other boys, Mithun’s coach Jyoti Prasad often played cricket with six-year-old Mitali to pass the time.
- Jyoti Prasad recognized Mithali Raj’s cricketing skills and suggested that her father should focus on Mithali instead of his son. Jyoti even recommended a National Institute of Sports coach named Sampath Kumar to her parents.
- Thereafter, she joined Sampath Kumar’s Women’s Cricket Glory Club for about two months, where he noticed her.

- At the age of 9, she was selected for the state junior championships under the guidance of Sampath Kumar. She is the youngest person to do so.
