Eugene Robinson, a columnist for the Washington Post and an analyst for MSNBC, referred to President Biden’s divisive speech on Thursday in Philadelphia as a “urgent wartime address,” continuing MSNBC’s current fixation with a potential civil war.
In a Friday appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” Robinson repeated Biden’s remarks when he said that the country is presently engaged in a “battle” to save its democracy. He said he was unaware of the “motive” or “delusion” that drives so-called MAGA Republicans to follow their “authoritarian path.”
Robinson continued, “He presented this as an emergency. “As something that our country must unite against in order to halt, reverse, and get back to our democratic practises and beliefs. Additionally, it seemed vital and related to a battle.
A columnist for The Post has recently made a number of statements that have raised eyebrows. Following the Supreme Court’s decision to reverse Roe v. Wade, Robinson equated those seeking abortions to slaves trying to escape for free states in a July 4 editorial.
This has become a recurring topic on MSNBC, where leftist commentator Tiffany Cross stated her concern that “the civil war is here” in the wake of the right’s fervent response to the FBI raid on former President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate.
When she served as a guest host on “The ReidOut” on MSNBC last month, the host made a such assertion. “People keep saying a civil war is coming, but I would say a civil war is here,” she remarked.
Biden’s speech in Philadelphia, according to left-leaning historian Michael Beschloss, was influenced by presidents’ addresses prior to two of the country’s most significant conflicts.
Beschloss told MSNBC he had spoken with President Biden on the state of America and historical analogies earlier this summer, and he later suggested that this had influenced Biden’s address. He recalled the address of President Abraham Lincoln and the occasions preceding the American Civil War.
“This nation was in serious danger in 1860. It was disintegrating. a divided home. slavery or lack thereof. Lincoln won the 1860 election by stating that “the house can’t stand, half slave, half free, we’ve got to choose,” according to Beschloss.
In 1940, when Franklin Roosevelt was seeking a third term, Beschloss said, “Franklin Roosevelt didn’t declare ‘the paramount issue this year is the minimum wage,’ even though that was pretty essential, or whether Texans get an oil depletion allowance or something like. Despite the fact that all of these issues are significant, he continued, “What is really at stake right now is whether or not our children will be able to live in an American democracy, especially with Hitler and the fascists looming in Europe and the threat of nuclear war.”
