Syed Ishtiaq Ahmed Jafri, popularly known as Jagdeep, is an Indian actor and comedian. He is famous for his role as ‘Soorma Bhopali’ in the Bollywood film ‘Sholay’.

Jagdeep was born on Wednesday, March 29, 1939 in Datia, Madhya Pradesh, British India (he died aged 81).
His zodiac sign is Aries. When Jagdeep was still very young, his father died. After his father’s death and the partition of India in 1947, his family began to face financial crises. To cope with the financial pressure they faced, his mother moved to Mumbai. She started working as a cook in an orphanage in Mumbai managing the finances. At the age of six or seven, in order to help his mother, Jagdeep gave up his studies and started selling kites, soap and combs on the roadside to make money. One day, he was spotted on the streets of Mumbai by a film director who invited him to play a role in the film Afsana.

Jagdeep is the son of Syed Yawar Husain Jafri (lawyer) and Kaneez Hyder. He has a brother named Amardeep.

Jagdeep married Naseem Begam when he was 18 years old. The couple has a son, Hussain Jafri, and two daughters, Shakira Shafi and Suraiya Jafri. His son, Hussein Jaffrey, died of a throat infection in 2009. Hussein lost both legs in a 2006 train accident. Later, he married Sughra Begum. Jagdeep has two sons from his second marriage, Javed Jaffrey (actor, dancer, comedian) and Naved Jaffrey (producer, director).
He married Nazima for the third time. They have a daughter named Muskan.
Profession
Jagdeep started his career as a child artist in 1951 with BR Chopra’s film Afsana. He then went on to work as a child artist in many films, including “Ab Dilli Door Nahin” (1953), “Munna” (1954), “Aar Paar” (1954), “Do Bigha Zamin” (1953), and “Hum Panchi Ek Dal Ke” (1957).
In 1957, he made his first starring role in the film “Bhabhi”. He subsequently appeared in films such as “Barkhaa” (1959), “Teen Bahuraniyan” (1968) and “Bidaai” (1974). Jagdeep established himself as a comedian with the film Brahmachari (1968).
He became popular for his role as “Soorma Bhopali” in the Bollywood film “Sholay” in 1975. He later went on to direct a film with the character’s name (Soorma Bhopali).

Jagdeep passed away on Wednesday, July 8, 2020, in Mumbai due to age-related health issues. The actor was buried at Shia Kabristan in Mumbai on July 9, 2020.
