After Olivia de Havilland passed away in Paris in July 2020, cinematic great EVA MARIE SAINT became our oldest living Academy Award winner and our earliest winner for 1954’s On The Waterfront. She also holds the distinction of being the oldest Hitchcock Blonde still alive, having played the enigmatic Eve Kendal in North by Northwest. She is one of the few living Golden Age Hollywood movie actresses and as close to Hollywood aristocracy as one can go.
Living contentedly on West 9th Street in Greenwich Village in 1953, Eva Marie shed tears as she left her home for the first day of filming Marlon Brando’s On The Waterfront. She was happy with her status as a Broadway performer and a trailblazer in the brand-new field of live television.
But the movie also brought in awards for Brando and the Best Picture of the Year, and it ultimately inspired her and her husband to relocate to Hollywood. That choice worked out well, resulting in long, prosperous careers for both of them. But they both always had a soft place for New York, and they went back whenever they could to see as many Broadway shows as they could in a single trip.
Miss Saint is unquestionably the exception with a career spanning 75 years in radio, theatre, television, film, and most lately, podcasts. Few actors, however, require an official archivist. I step in at this point. I have lived in Greenwich Village for a long time and have been a fan of Miss Saint’s since I saw her in Raintree County with Elizabeth Taylor in 1957.
In 1972, I had the opportunity to meet Miss Saint when she appeared on Broadway as Mary Todd Lincoln. She is a very private lady, but I gradually grew to care for her records and eventually served as the producer of three movies she appeared in about Broadway and Greenwich Village. Miss Saint currently owns more than 35 volumes of The Eva Marie Saint Archives that I have assembled.
Miss Saint, who is currently 96 years old and recently survived the passing of her director husband of 65 years, Jeffrey Hayden, lives alone in a stunning duplex condo in Westwood, Los Angeles. She continues to climb the stairs every day, read the Los Angeles Times, and cultivate tomatoes on her patio, which sparks a healthy rivalry and friendly competition with her daughter.
They frequently engage in heated arguments about whose vegetables are bigger and tastier. She is affectionately and protectively looked over and helped with grocery deliveries and park walks, always veiled and with as much social distance as possible, with her two grown daughters and four grandkids nearby.
