Dad Alexis Roberts has a special holiday tradition for his daughter – hiding an ugly dress in one of her Christmas gifts.

Speaking to PEOPLE, Roberts says the tradition, which she shared on TikTok, began in 2017. At the time, her father, Mark Dupuy, 54, went to a dry cleaner to pick up clothes when he came across a rack of dresses people had left behind. there for sale.

“He saw a bright pink, sparkly one, and knowing I never wear pink or sparkly, he thought it would be funny to give it to me,” says Roberts, 27. “I was looking for luggage that year because I was studying abroad, so I hid the dress in the luggage.”

“He’s bought me a dress every year since then,” she continues.

The Yorba Linda, Calif., native explains that while her father follows the same tradition every year, he always finds a way to make it different — whether it’s hiding the dress in another gift or making it look like a normal gift until it’s opened.

When Roberts finds the dress, she has to try it on: “Everyone can react and laugh at how ridiculous it looks.”

“The first dress I ever got was a pink dress,” she recalls. “This one definitely wasn’t one of the worst. The pineapple dress was so left field, everyone was fired up. The purple dress was the least flattering.”

She says one of her favorite dresses was the one she got last year: a blue and white prairie dress. Her dad also included her cousins ​​in the surprise and gave them dresses as well.

At the top of her list is the green floral dress she got this year. She says it fit her perfectly when she went to try it on.

“It made me feel like a fairy princess,” she says. “But it’s disgusting anyway because it was huge and I have no reason to wear it!”

Roberts also explains that she never wore dresses more than on Christmas morning. He adds that he always ends up donating it after the holidays.

One of her favorite parts of this tradition is looking back at all the videos and photos. Whenever she does, she remembers how much joy it brought her and her family to open each of the dresses.
