Who was Mike Spivey?
Mike Spivey was a former football player who achieved success at the collegiate and professional levels. He played for the University of Colorado (CU) Buffaloes from 1973 to 1976 as a defensive back, specializing in the corner and “Apache” linebacker positions. Known for his speed, strength and skill on the field, Spivey earned accolades throughout his college career, including first-team All-Big Eight Conference honors and an Associated Press honorable mention All-American his senior year.
Mike Spivey was born on March 10, 1954 in Houston, Texas. He attended Carver High School in nearby Aldine before joining the University of Colorado. He is survived by his wife Debra Spivey, daughter Nicole (Chris) Drzewiecki, son Joshua (Andrea) Spivey and their beloved puppy Mercy. He contributed to CU’s Big Eight championship team in 1976 and participated in prestigious bowl games such as the Astro-Bluebonnet Bowl and the Orange Bowl.
In the 1977 National Football League (NFL) draft, the Chicago Bears selected Spivey in the second round. He went on to have a six-year NFL career, playing for the Bears, Oakland Raiders, New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Falcons.
