How many horses can you spot in this picture? Credit: Bev Doolitte/National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences
This unique image shows several horses on top of a mountain, but the question is how many do you actually see?
The fantastic portrait was created by Bev Doolitte – and is featured on the National Institute for Environmental Health Services (NIEHS) website.
In it, what appears to be a bunch of white and brown horses are crowded together and blended into the brown rock and snow background, giving the image an optical illusion.
People have been scratching their heads trying to calculate the number of horses for a long time.
Some say they see five horses, others claim there are seven in total.
But you can try your luck and see if you can solve the challenge and beat these people.
Although the picture appears to be simple, it is more complex than it appears.
And you only have 12 seconds to solve it.
So buckle up, set the timer and test your puzzle-solving skills.
But be warned, you need the sharpest eye and the strongest mind – you must remain composed at all times.
You’re more likely to make a mistake if you try to rush it, so check every square inch of the image.
But did you know that solving optical illusions is a great way to train your brain and improve your creative thinking?
Also important is mental exercise, which increases the lifespan of short-term memory.
Studies have shown that people who regularly face optical illusions and puzzles improve their problem-solving skills, concentration and attention.
Advantages of optical illusions
RESEARCHERS have developed many tests to show how different regions of the brain respond to optical illusions.
They are not only entertaining, but shed light on how our brain interprets visual data.
By regularly exercising your brain, you improve your ability to focus and observe details.
Studies have shown that people who regularly face optical illusions and puzzles see great improvements in their problem-solving skills, concentration and attention.
Improved concentration and attention span, in turn, can help prevent cognitive decline in old age.
Psychologists at the University of Glasgow have discovered that looking at an optical illusion can improve vision by allowing you to see fine print
So before you start this one, try to see if you can spot all five differences between two identical pictures.
Or try to find a sausage that shouldn’t be with fruits and vegetables.
