Everything to Know About ‘Abbott Elementary’ Season 3

School has started again, and Abbott Elementary School returns for its 3rd season.

Janine Teagues (Quinta Brunson) and her fellow teachers, including Gregory Eddie (Tyler James Williams) and Melissa Schemmenti (Lisa Ann Walter), return for a third installment Abbott Elementary School this winter.

The mockumentary sitcom and its stars have received numerous accolades and nominations, including Brunson’s recent award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards, making her the first black woman to win the award in 42 years.

“Thank you very much, I love making Abbott Elementary School So much and I’m so happy to be able to live my dream and do comedy, and I say that every time and I just love comedy so much that I’m so happy to get this,” she said in her acceptance speech.

“I didn’t prepare anything because I just didn’t think… Oh God. I love my mom, my dad. My sisters, my brothers. My whole family so much. I love my husband. I’m so happy. I love my cast. Oh, I love Abbott Elementary School. Thanks a lot.”

Who’s in the cast Abbott Elementary School season 3?

The entire main cast from seasons one and two – Quinta Brunson, Tyler James Williams, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Janelle James, Lisa Ann Walter, Chris Perfetti and William Stanford Davis – will all return to the halls of Abbott in season three.

It has not yet been confirmed whether previous recurring characters and guest stars such as Ayo Edebiri, Taraji P. Henson and Keyla Monterroso Mejia will return for Season 3. But Sheryl Lee Ralph has her eye on two A-listers she’d love to see appear on the ABC series.

“I really want Denzel [Washington] like my brother,” the sitcom star said Diversity on the red carpet ahead of the Emmy Awards, and admitted that while she really just wants the actor to “show up,” she hasn’t actually invited him to show up yet.

Ralph also revealed that she “heard there was a possibility” that Meryl Streep would make a cameo, which gives her hope for Washington as well. “I mean, if it can be Meryl, I mean, it can be Denzel!”

How Abbott Elementary School season 2 cut off?

Season 2 brought ups and downs for the teachers at Abbott, including a classroom fire, a failed attempt to convert the school to a charter school, parent-teacher conferences, and Gregory receiving the “Educator of the Year” award.

The romance between Janina and Gregory, the possibility of which has been brewing since the beginning of the series, finally culminated in a kiss in Season 2. At the time of their kiss, Gregory was fresh out of a relationship with Amber (Naté Jones), the parent of a student in his class, and Janine was still dating Gregory’s friend Maurice (Vince Staples).

During the school sleepover trip in the season finale, Gregory admits that he likes Janine and has feelings for her, but Janine is unable to jump into something new. In the end, at the end of the episode, he decides to focus on himself.

Going into the new season, showrunner Patrick Schumacker told TheWrap that the writers were thinking long-term about how they plan to move forward after the second season finale.

“In terms of Season 3, we definitely had an opportunity, because we were a little bit ahead even at the end of the year, to be able to start talking about bigger picture ideas before we wrapped the writers’ room,” he told the outlet.

Perfetti, who plays history teacher Jacob Hill, told PEOPLE of his conflicted thoughts on the pair, “I feel like I don’t know if my personal answer and Jacob’s answer match up.”

“I will say that I really appreciate the way our writers and producers — led, obviously, by the genius of Quinto Brunson — really subverted people’s expectations in a lot of ways,” he said. “I think I’m a team for now… What are my options? God. It’s really hard!”

He added: “I feel like as an actor you have to be able to make your case. And I can really make a strong case for both of them. I will say this: I think the way season two ended is exactly how it should have ended and the door is open. But , as this and certainly the previous year have taught us, life can sometimes change very quickly.”

PEOPLE exclusively premiered the first teaser for Season 3 in December 2023, giving fans a sneak peek at what’s in store for the upcoming 14 episodes.

“This is an excellent school and your children are learning,” Janine confidently declares in the video. “Yeah, right,” replies one dad, rolling his eyes as he leaves the classroom.

“I’m so happy to be back,” she says eagerly as she drives her car in another scene.

While the teaser doesn’t show much in the way of story, it does include classic Abbott antics like Gregory and Jacob’s wide eyes after the table falls down the stairs.

At another point, Melissa leads her students down the hall during a fire drill and jokingly announces, “One line, most flammable kids first.”

Meanwhile, a trailer for the new season was released in January, revealing that Principal Ava has changed her approach. “I went to Harvard this summer. I’ve learned what it really takes to do the job of a principal,” she says, before further clips show the school’s teachers struggling with her newfound strict way of overseeing the school, including Jacob declaring, “She has to be stopped.”

Barbara and Melissa talk Gregory into trying to seduce the principal in order to change his approach, which sees him showing off his new muscles at her office door.

“All these rules are so… hard,” he says as he shows his hands.

She remains unimpressed – and even continues to play Bear star Jeremy Allen White’s name in his response. “Here’s the rule: keep your hands off Jeremy Allen Black,” she says. Elsewhere, Janine – who also reveals in the trailer that she’s “trying to swear” – and Gregory give unconvincing answers about how their friendship is after the kiss they previously shared. “Oh no, no, no, no, Gregory and I are good,” Janine says as he adds, in his on-camera confession, “Yeah, we’re good.”

Abbott Elementary School is broadcast on Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET on ABC. New episodes are available to watch the day after they premiere on Hulu, where Seasons 1 and 2 are also available to stream.
