Everything to Know About The Diplomat Season 2

When Diplomat premiering on April 20, 2023, the series — starring Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell as American diplomats in London trying to prevent war — was an immediate success.

The series debuted at No. 1 on Netflix’s Top 10 and garnered more than 57 million hours of viewing in its first weekend, according to the streamer.

Just 10 days later, on May 1, 2023, Netflix renewed Diplomat for the second season. That same month, the American ambassador to the United Kingdom, Jane Hartley, hosted Russell, Sewell, and the rest of the cast at her home in Regent’s Park, London. “I feel incredibly lucky to be cast by the absurdly talented Keri Russell,” Hartley told PEOPLE.

According to Jinny Howe, Vice President of Drama at Netflix, the renewal was an easy decision. “Fans around the world are loving every minute A diplomat gripping and propulsive drama, and embracing Keri Russell’s powerful performance as Kate Wyler,” Tudumu said. “After that incredible cliffhanger, we can’t wait to see what the incredible visionary team of Deborah Cahn, Janice Williams and Keri Russell have in store for season two.”

Russell was nominated for an Emmy and a Golden Globe for the first season Diplomat for her portrayal of Kate Wyler, the reluctantly appointed ambassador to the United Kingdom sent to London to defuse a complicated political situation. With her is her husband Hal Wyler, played by Sewell, a former American ambassador who cannot help but get involved in his wife’s work.

In an interview with Hollywood Reporter TV Top 5 Debora Cahn, creator of the podcast and show, expressed her hopes for future seasons. “I sure like long stories,” she said. “I love being able to write about the little things and the little weird moments of people’s lives and their worlds. So I like long-form storytelling. I certainly hope it continues. And I have a lot of ideas about where it would go. But we’ll see. We’ll see what happens.”

In the series, Russell and Sewell play Kate and Hal Wyler, a married couple who are both political veterans.

Sewell’s character has extensive experience as a US ambassador to foreign countries, but his unorthodox methods have burned bridges. When a British aircraft carrier is attacked and the attacker is unclear, Michael McKean’s president, Rayburn, sends Russell’s character, Kate Wyler, to London against her wishes to defuse a situation that could quickly escalate into world war.

Hal also travels to the United Kingdom, but his behind-the-scenes service puts an even bigger strain on Kate’s job as she tries to find out who attacked the ship before the British Prime Minister takes revenge on an innocent country. It also affects Hal and Kate’s failing marriage.

How the 1st season came about Diplomat leave?

Spoilers ahead: In the season finale, Prime Minister Trowbridge is on the verge of launching a revenge attack on Iran, whom he blames for the attack on the ship. However, in the episode, Kate reveals that Trowbridge personally planned the attack, as a political power move to ensure his chances of re-election.

When tensions reach a breaking point, another attack occurs. In the final moments of the season one finale, the car carrying Hal and several other employees is blown up, leaving viewers and Russell’s character unclear as to who, if anyone, survived.

“I was completely surprised,” Russell said Deadline completion. “But Debora is such a veteran. She’s been doing this forever. She is a true professional. She knows what she’s doing. I guess she had that plan for a while, but I was completely surprised.”

The extreme cliffhanger was a deliberate move by Cahn. “I wanted it to make people want more,” she told Tudumu. “I wanted to bring together all the different dynamics of political relationships and personal relationships in one event that separates everyone at the same time.”

Sewell also hinted at Tuduma’s hope for the project to return for multiple seasons, saying, “All I know is if you solve it too quickly one way or the other, we’re screwed… I like to think there are enough problems to last [a few seasons]. Who knows? I wish someone with a better imagination than mine would take it up rather than follow my stupid suggestion.”

2nd season Diplomat began filming in London in June 2023, but was delayed due to last year’s writer and actor strikes.
