The threat to the Dutchman’s position increased after Tuesday’s 1-0 Champions League home defeat by Bayern Munich.

United crashed out of Europe with their lowest ever group stage tally of FOUR points.

And they didn’t even get relegated to the Europa League after finishing at the BOTTOM of Group A.

Ten misses by The Hague, who were also beaten 3-0 by Bournemouth at Prem last Saturday, were booed as their season sank to a new low.

And Sunday’s heavy defeat at bitter rivals Liverpool – where United were humiliated 7-0 in March – could be the final straw for the under-fire Ten Hag.

Jose Mourinho was sacked by the Red Devils after a 3-1 defeat by Jurgen Klopp in December 2018.

Potter, 48, has been unsuccessful since being sacked by Chelsea in April after less than a season in charge.

But Ratcliffe remains a big fan of the former Swansea and Brighton boss and wanted him at French side Nice.

The Ineos boss is set to buy 25 per cent of United next week and take over football operations immediately.

Potter turned down the chance to succeed Alex Neil as manager of Championship side Stoke this week.

It is understood he is only willing to return to the dugout if a bigger job presents itself.

Ten Hag is United’s fifth full-time manager since Sir Alex Ferguson retired after the 2012-13 triumph.

But the 53-year-old Dutchman is following the path of his predecessors, despite a good first season in charge.

The former Ajax boss finished third in the Premier League last season, reached both domestic cup finals and won the Carabao Cup — United’s first silverware in six years.

They have regressed this term, losing 12 out of 24 games in all competitions.

Captain Bruno Fernandes misses Sunday’s trial at Anfield through suspension, while defenders Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw are question marks after picking up injuries against Bayern.

Off the pitch, United will also take a financial hit of more than £20m following their exit from the Champions League.

They are believed to be on budget to reach the quarter-finals, so they will lose out on match revenue and TV money, as well as attendance and performance fees.
