Time to break through their tissues again!
Favorite home renovation series Extreme Makeover: Home Edition officially returns on Thursday, Jan. 2, and PEOPLE got an exclusive first look at some of the heartwarming scenes viewers can expect in the upcoming season.
This time, the show will see The Home Edit’s Clea Shearer and Joanna Teplin take over hosting duties as they transform the homes — and lives — of struggling families.
The exclusive clip above teases some signature moments, including a crowd chanting the show’s iconic line, “Move that bus!”, the new hosts donning helmets as they lift the frame of a house they have “96 hours to build,” according to Shearer.

And of course, the emotions that come with each episode are at the fore: clips of deserving families with shocked and tearful expressions roll across the screen as they see their new homes for the first time.
“This was more than just that Extreme home decoration, this was extreme living arrangement,” says one homeowner summing it up as the video comes to an end.

Extreme Makeover: Home Edition first hosted by Ty Pennington during its original run on ABC from 2004 to 2012. The series returned in 2020 for a one-season reboot on HGTV with a new host, Modern familyJesse Tyler Ferguson.
After it was announced that the founders of The Home Edit would be taking over hosting duties for the series (which is returning to its original network on ABC), PEOPLE spoke with them about how they felt before joining the franchise.
“We are just the most grateful. I don’t even know how we got here, honestly,” said Teplin at the time, adding that it was the “opportunity of a lifetime” for both of them.
Shearer reiterated that it’s a “pinch-me situation,” especially being able to connect with families who may have faced scary health situations following her own breast cancer diagnosis in 2022.
“It’s such an iconic franchise,” Teplin continued. “And then not only is it the one family that deserves it, but it brings the whole community together in such an amazing, just compassionate way.”
“I think we’re going to cry,” Shearer added. (She was right.)
Extreme Makeover: Home Edition premieres Thursday, January 2nd and will air on Hulu.
