Farley Nariman

Fali S Nariman (1929-2024) was an Indian who served as a senior lawyer in the Supreme Court of India. From May 1972 to June 1975, he served as Solicitor General of India. From 1999 to 2005, he served as a nominated member of the Federal Council. He passed away due to health problems on February 21, 2024 at the age of 95.

Fali Sam Nariman was born on Thursday, January 10, 1929 in Rangoon, Burma Province, British India (now Rangoon, Myanmar) (age 95; death). His zodiac sign is Capricorn. His family moved to India when he was 12 in 1942 during the Japanese invasion of Burma. He studied at Bishop Cotton School in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh. He received his bachelor’s degree in economics and history from St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai. He received his law degree (LL.B.) from the Government Law College, Bombay, in 1950. He ranked first in his examinations and was awarded the Golden Locke Forbes Gold Medal and the Roman Prize for Law and Jurisprudence. Initially, his father wanted him to take the Indian Civil Service Examination; however, as he could not afford it at the time, he decided to study law.

Profession

Nariman started his legal career in the Bombay High Court. He joined the Bombay High Court as an Advocate in November 1950 and was appointed Senior Advocate in 1961. After practicing law for 22 years, he served as Senior Advocate in the Supreme Court of India in 1971. Played an important role in formulating the Constitution of India. He served as Solicitor General of India from May 1972 to June 1975, but resigned during the declaration of Emergency on June 26, 1975. Nariman represented Union Carbide in the infamous Bhopal gas disaster case, a decision he later admitted was a mistake. However, he played a key role in out-of-court settlement negotiations between victims and the company, which resulted in $470 million in compensation for the victims.

From 1999 to 2005, he served as a presidentially appointed member of the Upper House of the Indian Parliament. He has served as Chairman of the International Commercial Arbitration Council, Chairman of the Bar Association of India, Vice Chairman of the International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce, and Honorary Member of the International Commission of Jurists. He has also been a member of the London Court of International Arbitration since 1988 and was appointed to the Advisory Board of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development in November 1999. 1995-1997. On October 17, 2014, Nariman represented former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalitha in a conviction case and won her bail. Bail was denied.
