“It’s time for mayonnaise!”
That’s what fans in attendance at Duke’s Mayo Bowl proudly shouted before throwing large sprays of spice before the North Carolina Tar Heels took on the West Virginia Mountaineers on Wednesday.
The reason for the shootings? Well, for starters, Duke’s Mayonnaise is the main sponsor of the game.
Duke’s Mayo Bowl Instagram account shared a compilation of fans chanting the phrase before consuming the cream sauce. Even more game day fans were spotted gobbling it up at a fan fest held near Bank of America Stadium in NC for the annual college sports event.
The Mountaineers ended up defeating the Tar Heels 30-10.

However, fans of both teams seemed to be in good spirits as they ate and drank their way through the sporting event with mayonnaise snacks specially prepared for the occasion.
Duke’s Mayo Bowl’s X account retweeted and shared plenty of game day footage, including tape two fans on the field dipping what appeared to be French fries into a bowl of mayonnaise while talking to an ESPN reporter.

A man was sitting in the stadium seen on camera eating the spice from the jar with a spoon as if it were ice cream. But the weird snack choices don’t end there!
A recipe for a spice mix called “Mayo Mocktail” was shown on the Jumbotron.
The ingredients called for 2 ounces of Duke’s Mayo, 9 ounces of eggnog, 3 ounces of simple syrup, a dash of nutmeg and cinnamon, and a cup of ice. On the split screen, two fans — one from each team — stood at a table with ingredients ready to be mixed.
Announcers Matt Barrie and Dan Mullen joined the Mayo mania during pre-game analysis. The duo were seen hesitantly trying the mayo-covered nachos.

The annual event — known as “the only game with Twang” on the Bowl’s official website — has landed Duke’s as a 2020 sponsor.
Over the years, fans seem to have enjoyed the brands involved – and so have the teams!

“MAYO DUMP. COMING SOON,” Duke’s Mayo Bowl X account tweeted shortly before West Virginia coach Neal Brown was doused in gallons of dressing to celebrate his team’s win.
“I’m cold. I’m wet. But I feel like a winner,” he said after continuing the tradition. On Wednesday night, Brown became the third college football coach to receive the honor.
South Carolina Gamecocks coach Shane Beamer is the recipient of the award in December 2021.
“Mayonnaise never tasted so good, I can promise you,” he said sports correspondent Taylor McGregor after a massive spill.
