Harry Potter author JK Rowling has written screenplays for movies. Back in 2016, Rowling said she intended for the prequel franchise to span five films: “Now I’ve got the plot pretty well worked out so we’re pretty sure it’s going to be five films,” she said at the time.

Yates, however, said at Inside Total Film podcast that he was unaware of the intentions of the five films when he signed up.

“The idea that there would be five films was a complete surprise to most of us, because Jo spontaneously mentioned it at the press screening,” he recalled. “… We all signed up FB1 very enthusiastically, and Jo, bless her… she said, ‘Oh, by the way, there’s five of them.’ We all looked at each other, because no one told us there would be five of them. We kind of committed to this, so that’s the first time we’ve heard of him.”

The director said he was “so proud” of the third film, and “when it went out into the world, we just had to stop, stop and take it easy.”

“In terms of our production cycle, we all came out of the third one, it was a wonderful experience making that movie. But we’re just all on hiatus,” he said, adding that he hasn’t spoken to Rowling, producer David Heyman or Warner Bros. about more movies.

“We’re just taking a break and it’s really nice because it allows me to do things like this [Pain Hustlers] and other things I have lined up that I’m excited about,” Yates said.

Redmayne told NME in January that he was unaware of any plans for a fourth sequel: “I mean, there’s nothing that I’m aware of at the moment. So, as far as I know, it’s not something that’s on the cards.”
