Fatman Scoop's Ex-Wife Shanda Remembers Him as an 'Icon and Legend' After His Death: 'He Was a Pure Heart'

Fatman Scoop’s ex-wife Shanda Freeman pays tribute to the beloved hype man and musician following his death at the age of 53.

On Saturday, August 31, the author and life coach shared a series of photos of Fatman Scoop – real name Isaac Freeman III – on Instagram shortly after his death was announced, and a day after he collapsed on stage during a concert in Connecticut.

In one post, she wrote a heartfelt tribute to her late ex-husband, describing him as an “icon” and sharing her “love” for him.

“I would like to PERSONALLY THANK EVERYONE who showed so much LOVE to Isaac @fatmanscoop and me. He was an ICON and a LEGEND and so many people love him,” Shanda wrote on Instagram, alongside a YouTube screenshot of their ’00s MTV reality show A man and a woman.

“He was pure of heart and loved to give back and help others. Isaac had the BEST PARENTS and through them he got to know his heart. He will be missed FOREVER, many will APPRECIATE and ADORE him,” she added. “He put me in front of the camera and I will forever be GRATEFUL and LOVE him. THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!! The couple divorced after 13 years together, he revealed on “The Premium Pete Show” in 2018 to TODAY, and most notably starred together on the MTV series, which IMDB says ran for one season and premiered in 2008. The interactive series, based on their self-titled video podcast followed the couple as they discussed safe sex, loyalty, relationship building and various other relationship topics.

Along with her longer tribute, Shanda also posted a photo of her late ex-husband at the show, an old portrait of them together, and a promotional photo with A man and a woman days.

“We made history I. We were the FIRST. I’m heartbroken. I love you. Always πŸ™πŸΎπŸ™πŸΎβ€οΈπŸ’” Shanda,” she wrote alongside a picture of the couple from A man and a woman.

The rapper’s booking agency, MN2S, confirmed his death to PEOPLE on Saturday, and his official Instagram page shared the news in a family statement. Mayor Lauren Garrett of Hamden, Conn. she revealed a day earlier that the entertainer was taken to hospital on August 30 after collapsing during a show.

His representative said The Hollywood Reporter on Saturday, August 31, that the rapper is survived by his son, daughter and brother.

Known for his 1999 hit “Be Faithful,” as well as a string of songs on songs including Missy Elliott’s “Lose Control” and Mariah Carey’s “It’s Like That,” the rapper’s family wrote in an Instagram message that he is also “known to the world as undisputed voice of the club.”

“Last night, the world lost a shining soul, a beacon of light on stage and in life,” the family said in a statement. “FatManScoop was not only a world-class performer, he was a father, brother, uncle and friend. He was the laughter in our lives, a constant source of support, unwavering strength and courage.”

“…His joy was infectious and his generosity will be sorely missed by all of us, but not forgotten,” the statement said. “While we mourn the loss of FatMan Scoop, we also celebrate his remarkable life and the countless lives he touched. FatMan Scoop’s legacy is one of love and light, and will live on in our hearts and memories forever.”

Numerous collaborators and fans continued to pay tribute to the musician on social media, with Missy Elliott writing on X (formerly Twitter) that his “VOICE and energy contributed to MANY songs that made people feel HAPPY and want to dance for over 2 decades.”

“Your IMPACT is HUGE and will NEVER be forgotten..πŸ•ŠοΈπŸ™πŸΎ,” she wrote.
