Fazil died on February 23, 2024, in a fire caused by a lithium-ion battery in a six-story apartment building on St. Nicholas Place in Harlem. The fire unfortunately claimed Khan’s life and injured 17 others. According to the New York Fire Department, a total of 18 people were rescued, 12 of whom were taken to nearby hospitals, four of whom were in critical condition. Fire Chief John Hawkins said in a statement,
On the third floor, an apartment door where the fire started was open. The fire was so intense…if you can imagine, the flames were coming out of that door and blocking the stairwell. “
According to reports, multiple videos and images documenting the rescue operation have attracted widespread attention on social media. Survivors of a building incident must either jump out or use a fire escape. The Indian Embassy in New York provided support on February 25, 2024, confirming that they had engaged with the victim’s family and friends to assist in the deportation of his body to India. The Indian Embassy wrote to X:
Sad to learn that Mr. Fazil Khan, a 27-year-old Indian citizen, passed away in an unfortunate fire incident in Harlem, New York. The Indian Embassy in New York is in touch with the family and friends of the late Mr. Fazil Khan. We will continue to provide all possible assistance to India to restore his remains. “
Following his death, his organization The Hechinger Report expressed condolences on X (formerly Twitter), writing:
We learned Saturday that Fazil Khan, a data reporter for The Hechinger Report, died in a fire in the New York City building where he lived. We are saddened by the loss of such a great colleague and wonderful human being, and our hearts go out to his family. He will be deeply missed. “
