FFXIV How Does Rested Exp Work?

Leveling up in FFXIV can be difficult at times, but there is actually a mechanic in the game that rewards you for taking the occasional break. This is called an experience rest, and it acts as an experience boost to help you work at a higher level when you return to the game.

What is Rested Exp?

Rested experience is an experience boost given to characters who have been offline (or just AFK) for a while. It can be used to balance all classes, whether combat (Disciple of War or Magic) or non-combat (Disciple of the Hand or Disciple of Earth).

Like most other experience boosts, Rested Exp is only available in combat, gathering, or crafting events. It does not apply to everyday products such as search rewards or roulette or delivery rewards.

You can see your current rested Exp in the experience bar on the HUD. It may seem like a vague extension of your current experience.

If the bar is blue, you have enough rested experience stored to proceed to the next level. You can store up to 1.5 levels of Rest XP, and it takes 4 days to fully store.

How do you get Rested Exp?

All you need to do to build an Exp Rest is log out or hang in the shelter. Shelters are represented by a small crescent symbol at the end of the experience bar. If you are in a city or settlement, you are most likely in a shelter.

The game doesn’t actually allow you to leave immediately if you’re not in a shelter. Instead, a countdown window will appear. If this happens, you know you are not in a shelter and you should cancel and go to the shelter first.

No need to log out of the inn room. This is a common mistake among new players. When you log back into the game, all the inn room does is give you a cute “wake up” animation.

In general, if you are near an Aetheryte, an NPC vendor, or an area with no enemies, you are in Sanctuary. But if you’re not sure, just look for the crescent moon icon in your experience bar.

Interestingly, if you are in a Shrine while entering a duty like a dungeon, you will continue to accumulate Rested Exp over time. This means that even if you start the dungeon without storing anything, you will occasionally get extra experience points from enemies in the dungeon because you have gained some Rested Exp.

How do you use Rested Exp?

You can think of rest experience as a pool of stored experience that is distributed to you as experience increases, as long as you have some left over. Whenever you gain experience through combat, gathering, or crafting, you gain 50% more experience from your Rested Exp store. This will be included in your system messages as you gain experience.

For example, you may get the message “Gained 8,313 XP (+50%) EXP”, which means that part of this 8,313 XP was due to your rested Exp being consumed. So you can’t “pick” which jobs to spend it on, it’s automatically consumed until it’s gone. You have to pay attention and choose to work in the job you want to gain experience.

Don’t worry if you are using the highest level of work. You will not waste Rested Exp while playing these jobs, nor will your experience store be consumed.

Combat Jobs often have multiple active experience buffs, whether it be armory rewards, food effects, or special gear. Add 50% Rest Exp to these for a single total, so you may see higher values like (+200%).

It is generally more difficult to spend Rested Exp on crafters, as it only affects experience for crafting recipes, not quests or deliveries. You have to have a lot of materials ready to craft to squeeze out all the stored experience. Collectors can always grind nodes or make Leves to use boosts, as their Levequests provide experience for the event, rather than giving them away.

Tips for using Rested Exp

Rested Exp is a single resource shared by all of your assignments. If you have some savings, any of your jobs below max level will consume them as you gain experience through combat, crafting, or gathering. Keep this in mind if you’re trying to upgrade for a specific job.

You can get the most “bonus” by using Rested Exp in higher level jobs. Lower level jobs require less experience to get to the next level, so level 1.5 XP is less important on level 10 jobs than it is on level 60 jobs.

That said, it’s a small difference that only matters if you’re really trying to min your levels to make them as fast as possible across multiple jobs. I tend to level up only one job at a time, so if that job is still low, it gains experience anyway.

The fastest way to burn out is to repeatedly gain a lot of experience. Killing lots of enemies in your level (like in a leveling dungeon), crafting your level’s recipes, or gathering your level’s materials are all effective ways to take advantage of the 50% boost.

Always make sure to log out or hang up (check the crescent moon in your experience bar) while in a shelter to ensure you get Exp Rest when you’re not playing.

Spend your stored Exp progressing through level dungeons, crafting level recipes, or collecting from level nodes.

When stocking up on XP, focus on the jobs you want to level up first so you don’t inadvertently spend it on lesser jobs.

I hope this helps you get the most out of your break experience and encourages you to take regular breaks while playing. Do you have any questions about this or any other experience improvements? Let me know in the comments.
