FFXIV How to Choose Your Grand Company

Final Fantasy XIV confronts you with a decision relatively early in the game, which might leave some new players a bit paralyzed by choice. You must choose a large corporation to ally with to advance the story, but what does that even mean? As important as it sounds, people are afraid of making the “wrong” decision.

It’s not really a big deal. Here I tell you how it will affect your choice, and what you should take into account when choosing between the three Dalians.

What is the difference between large companies?

Functionally, all three Adders, Flames, and Maelstrom are identical. The difference lies in their stories, activities and charms and of course the different cities in which they are based. When you play Frontline PvP mode, you also have the option to fight for your Great Company and you can only team up with other people from your faction (or freelancers from your faction).

Can I switch to a bigger company?

If you want to change it later, you can definitely change it by talking to the personnel officer of the faction you want to join (once every 15 days). Your first transfer is free, but if you want to transfer more after that, each transfer will cost 50,000 gil.

This can be a lot of gil early game, so I recommend upgrading your Great Company first before doing the second conversion. Also keep in mind that you will keep all your squad progress, but you will have to unlock it by re-ranking in your new faction. PvP ranks are remembered individually for each faction, but you will only progress within your current Great Company.

convenient

Probably the most important factor in choosing your Large Company is how easy it is to get to your location when you need it. You’ll be frequenting the location, so if it’s a bit far away, you’ll get an extra 5-10 seconds, and that will stack up over time.

Running from the main Aether Crystal to Adder’s Nest in Gridania takes around 12 seconds.

The Hall of Fire is only about 9 seconds from the main Ul’dah ether if you jump from the flowerbed to the side of the building.

To be honest, Maelstrom Barracks is not in a good position. Once you get to Limsa, you’ll still need to use the ether to get it to the fantail, then cross a bridge. My loading screen time took around 18 seconds total.

Of course, if you’ve decided to make one of these three cities your home ethereum, and you’re going to be spending time there anyway, that could lead you in one direction. For example, many people choose Limsa as their rest stop because of the easy access to market boards and call bells. For these folks, it might make more sense to have Maelstrom as their Great Company.

If you’re lucky enough to buy a residential plot that sits on a bed of lavender, your point of origin is probably set to Gridania, and you’d like to take advantage of the free ride from main ethereum to wards.

It also depends on where you like to be. Maybe you really like the aesthetic of Ul’dah. The music and the atmosphere will immerse you in it.

These are all things to consider, but they revolve around where you find yourself spending the most time in the world. There may be another small benefit to owning a large business.

charm

One of the most notable differences between the Big Companies is what kind of gear or clothing you can buy from the vendors there. Of course, this isn’t available early on, but as you rank up, you’ll gain access to more gear in your company’s signature style.

These outfits cannot be dyed, so their colors represent the official NPCs you see throughout the game. Vipers wear yellow, green, and brown clothing. The Flame wear more subdued blues and grays. Maelstrom’s uniforms have a lot of red and black.

They all have a top rated level 50 iconic body part. If you love that particular charisma, then that might be enough to get you into a great company. Remember, you must be a current member to use glamour, even if you previously purchased and then switched companies.

Even if you’re not a member, you can view vendor offerings from each Great Company. You won’t be able to buy anything, but you will still be able to try things on in the changing room window. Take a look at their best deals to see if they’re right for you.

pvp

This is one of the most intense aspects of Large Companies that concerns no one but those who are genuinely into PvP. As a current member of the Great Company, you have the option to always queue for frontline PVP matches. If you want, you can also check the Frontline Freelancer option in the job finder and be placed with random companies as needed. This may slightly reduce queue time, but may result in a lower overall success rate, depending on your data center.

There used to be a stereotype that the maelstrom was always the winner. In my experience, this hasn’t been the case for a while, at least in Light’s data center. It’s more of a psychological phenomenon of “I like the new and I don’t like the old”. Once you replace the Big Companies, the one you left behind seems to start winning.

You hardly know when you’re winning, but if you see another faction enter a match twice in a week, that’s important to you because our negative experiences tend to have a bigger impact on our influence. They are likely to have a close ability.

I say don’t worry too much about the Great Company you PvP in, but maybe spend some time instead of working independently to find out how much you like your data center faction. You can also search the data center PvP discord groups and see how active they are to get an idea of how much one company has over the others.

in conclusion

My suggestion is to look at each of the Grand Company HQ vendors and see if you fall for any weapons or body charms. If not, I recommend that you match your allegiance to the city you designate as your home.

I personally chose Limsa and Maelstrom because I started my FFXIV journey there and I like the vibe there. I also took advantage of a marketplace board I kept on hand, so if I needed to go to my Big Company, I didn’t mind spending the extra time on Ethernet.

What made you choose your Great Company? What do you like about them and how do they perform in PvP in your data center? Close in comments.
