There are several different types of tomestones in Final Fantasy XIV, including Phantasmagoria and the precious Goetia tomestones, which become available once you reach the maximum level. However, many players forget about Poetics entirely once they hit the level cap and start focusing on the endgame quests. This makes them sit in their tomestone caps because they don’t spend Poetics.
While they won’t help you achieve any end goals, such as crafting or equipment, Poetics is a good balance for other jobs, acquiring heirloom weapons and other charm items, gardening, or even making a profit in the market. Don’t let them sit full in your inventory when they could be put to good use.
How to get Poetics
first bonus
Every time you complete a quest that you or another party member hasn’t completed before, you will be rewarded with Poetics. This will give you a steady stream of codex income as you progress through the main scenario dungeons and trials, but it’s also a bit of a bonus when helping new players complete content.
New players are sometimes encouraged to advertise on Party Finder if they need help completing the quest queue or removing old Ultimate Trials to complete the quest. To attract high-level players, they need to advertise that they have a first bonus on their recruiting. The additional poetics that come with it may inspire more people to come and help.
Roulette
It should come as no surprise that roulette is the most efficient and reliable way to collect a tome of poetics. After all, roulette is designed to incentivize high-end players to keep running old content so that new players can always find someone to fill their ranks. Poetics is a bonus for running content that used to be an endgame level cap duty, so the two naturally go hand in hand.
One of the best things about Poetics is that you don’t have to run the content on a level 80 character to get them. You can collect these tomestones while leveling up the lower classes.
Only a few wheels offer Poetics as a daily reward, as listed below. The amount in parentheses is the minimum reward you can get from the duties you give it. Certain dungeons or raids may offer more; older levels limit dungeons to 50.
Roulette | poetic theory |
Level 50/60/70 | 100 (+20*) |
main scene | 300 (+200) |
alliance raid | 100 (+100) |
regular raid | 80 |
fantastic tail
Khloe Aliapoh from Idyllshire gives you a weekly Wondrous Tails journal full of tasks to complete. Checking off nine of these will allow you to turn in your completed journal and receive a reward, depending on how lucky you are in placing your stamps. Usually one of the easiest rewards is 500 Codex of Poetics.
pvp
I’ve been enjoying PvP more and more, and the number of poetic tomestones you get is pretty good for a small time investment. Frontline matches will give you 50 while party matches will only give you 20, but the matches are usually short. The parties are more intense and you have more responsibilities, so if you’re not already as confident in your PvP toolkit, Frontlines is the way to go.
what to buy with poetics
Level 50, 60 and 70 gear
If you haven’t leveled up all of your combat classes, you can prepare for that by purchasing a set of gear for each stage of the leveling process. Tome of Poetics is the currency used to acquire vintage endgame gear, so at levels 50, 60, and 70, you’ll be ready with the best gear for your job. These teams usually last until the third dungeon of the next expansion pack (The Aery, Bardam’s Mettle, or The Qitana Ravel), after which the dungeons start to have better stats.
Be sure to upgrade gear with the appropriate upgrade items (twine, solvent, etc.) to gain an additional level 10 item and the ability to dye gear. This upgraded gear usually lasts until the fourth dungeon of the next expansion, at which point you should upgrade dungeon drops or HQ crafted gear for the best combat effectiveness.
At level 50, you can get Ironworks gear from Auriana’s Mor Dhona (Aelina sells this weapon in exchange for Encrypted Codex Stones and Rowena’s Poetics Tokens, which you buy from Auriana). If you want to upgrade these items, you can also buy carbontwine and carboncoat here, but you need to take them to Hyrstmill (North Shroud) and have NPC Drake upgrade them to ilvl 130.
At level 60, you can buy the Idyllshire Shire equipment from Hismena (Bertana will give you Rowena’s Bible Tokens and miniature tomestone weapons, available from Hismena). Upgrade these items by purchasing Illuminati Deepest Gobdip, Tautest Gobtwine, or Darkest Gobcoat for weapons, armor, or accessories, respectively. Be careful to choose the correct upgrade materials so you don’t waste your poetic tome. Once you have the items, take them outside the building to Seika in Idyllshire (6.7, 7.4) and he will give you the ilvl 270 upgraded version.
At level 70, you’ll want to get Scaevan gear from Enna in Rhalgr’s Reach (weapons can be purchased from Eschina with Military Grade Codex and Rowena’s Genesis Tokens, all purchased from Enna). Augment all of these things with Scaevan Ester, Twine, or Shellac via E’bolaff at the end of the counter, depending on the item type, and you’ll get yourself a level 400 set to kick off your Shadowbringers content.
another charm team
For the level 60 and 70 locations, there are a couple of other sets you might be interested in, just for aesthetics. His ilvl is lower than his previous counterparts, but we all know that charisma is truly endgame, so explore the vendors mentioned and see if you like any of the pieces.
They’re pretty cheap these days because they’re bought at Poetics tomestones, and a lot of these designs are really cool. Remember to update them if you want them to tint.
relic weapon materials
Some relic weapons require materials purchased with poetic tomestones. If you’re working on Zodiac (A Realm Reborn) or Anima (Heavensward) weapons, make sure you have everything you need before dumping Poetics on things you don’t care about.
Level 80 Shadowbringers heirloom weapons also cost 1000 Poetics each. In addition to the first one you get for free, the base relic requires four Thavnairian Scale Dust, which can be purchased from Auriana in Revenant’s Toll for 250 Poetics each. These can be found in the “Special Weapons” section of your menu.
garden supplies
If you’re an avid gardener, you probably need a lot of soil. Level 3 Thanalan Topsoil is especially useful for maximizing plant hybridization and is a good use for poetic tomestones. This item can be purchased from Beltana for an unrecognized mineral, and from Hismine in the “Special Weapons” tab for 150 Poetics.
You can also buy Tier 3 Shroud Topsoil, which increases crop yields. Keep in mind that there are a few plants whose yields are not affected by this type of soil. This advanced topsoil is obtained in the same way as the previous one, but with an unrecognizable cover in its place.
in conclusion
I hope you find something useful for all your poetic tomes. Let me know in the comments where you spend them, or if I’ve missed another use for them.
