Silent Witness boss reveals major changes for season 27 and exciting show first

Silent Witness producer Jayne Chard has revealed that the long-running crime drama will get major changes in its upcoming 27th season.

Interview with HELLO! and other reporters during a visit to the set in July, Jayne revealed that fans can expect to see more color in the series through changes to the characters’ backgrounds and costumes.

Jayne, who joined the show for series 27 and brought along production designer Paul Booth and costume designer Adam Howe, explained that adjustments were made to the styles of the characters, especially Emilia Fox’s Nikki Alexander, with the aim of modernizing her look and restoring the “fashion icon”.

Adam, who previously worked on shows like SnakeWhen he brought more color to Nikki’s wardrobe, he said, it became a bit “tomboyish”.

The most dramatic fashion change, however, is for Jack’s niece, Cara, played by Rhiannon Jones. Adam explained that Cara will be wearing more colors this season to reflect her character’s growing confidence. “She’s really blooming and looking great and confident,” he said.

Fans can also expect a change to the scene, with the addition of colorful tones and more light to subtly define each space in The Lyell. “It’s a great setting and a great space, we just tweaked it a bit to improve it in some of the offices,” says production designer Paul. “The actual set is very impressive, with different work areas. I’m just trying to put it all together.”

Jayne also revealed that the series will offer a “virtual production” for the first time in the show’s history. “This is going to be a new and exciting journey that has never happened before on this show,” she said. “It’s going to really expand what we can do in series 28.”

Fans can also look forward to using the balcony in Gabriel’s office for the first time in history, after introducing transition lighting to the set, which is a large illuminated photographic backdrop.

Production on the new series is well underway, with filming starting just a day after the season 26 finale aired on BBC One.

While the BBC has yet to reveal an official release date for the sequel, if previous seasons count, we expect new episodes to come out around January 2024.

Of course, Emilia Fox and David Caves will reprise their host roles, Dr Nikki Alexander and Jack Hodgson. Alastair Michael will also return as Velvy Schur, alongside Aki Omoshaybi as Gabriel Flukoya and Rhiannon May as Cara Connelly.

The story of Nikki and Jack has captivated fans over the past few series. Talking about her movie romance with co-star David, Emilia tells HELLO! in an exclusive interview earlier this year: “Audiences have waited ten years and they are incredibly loyal, generous, kind and loving audiences who have invested in their relationship. Jack and Nikki. I think everyone agrees that what we don’t want to happen is that we connect them and then break them right away.”

She added: “I’m all for Jack and Nikki.”
