Fletcher has come to terms with how Lyme disease has affected her sound.
In an interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1 Thursday, the “Undrunk” singer (whose real name is Carrie Fletcher), 29, revealed how the diagnosis has affected her vocal cords and her upcoming album In search of an antidote.
Fletcher explained that in the past she found “antidote” in women, shows, fans, stages and tequila. But in the past year, “the antidote for me has literally been medicine and doctors.”
Singer Fletcher reveals Lyme disease diagnosis: ‘It took a huge toll on my body’
“Last year I was diagnosed with Lyme disease and I got really, really sick,” she explained, adding: “I had to move home and I was getting treatment all the time, and in between I was writing this music. I was going to the studio and then I would I’d go to treatment and then I’d go back to the studio.”
Battling Lyme ultimately transformed Fletcher’s sound.
“It changed my voice a lot, my vocal cords,” the “Becky’s So Hot” musician said. “And so I had to let go of that idea of a perfect vocal or a sound that I was so attached to before, and I really had to dig down to these depths of, what does the sound of my heart sound like? Because I can’t work the way I was before.”
Due to her illness, Fletcher “took a really big break from social media.”
“As I watched the applause die down and the analytical streams fall and watch[ed] everything gets really quiet, I noticed all the other things that got really loud, and that was the darkness in my own mind,” she said. “And I just faced myself outside of the stories, outside of the fans, outside of any show. I had to look at what was here in front of me and also ask myself why I had allowed myself to get to this point, to push my body so far, to get so sick, and that it took me so long to recognize it, to see and listen. ”

Fletcher “had no choice but to face that truth.”
“I feel like I made a pact with myself and I said, ‘I’ll never leave myself again.’ If I can’t show up and have a regulated nervous system and recognize when my body is telling me to drink water, telling me to go out into nature, regardless of the needs, the needs of the soul, the needs of the heart, the needs of the body. I will never compromise that again.” , she said.
Fletcher continued, “For the first time in my life, it doesn’t feel like there’s this separation between Carrie and Fletcher. There’s this weaving that happens as an embodiment of the two of them, so I’m so excited to be appearing in this way.”

On Thursday, Fletcher also shared “Lead Me On,” which is from her upcoming sophomore album In search of an antidote and the deadline is March 22.
“Over the years I’ve sought antidote in so many things: women, the road, the stage, fans, spirituality and self-reflection,” the pop star said in a statement. “Recording this album was an excavation, a deep dive where I asked myself what would truly heal me, and my ultimate realization was that love is the antidote.”
She added: “From Finding Fletcher EP until you destroyed New York City for me S(EX) TAPES to The girl of my dreams, love has always been my muse. But until now, I don’t think I’ve ever really looked at love through all the different lenses and angles and discovered all its infinite manifestations. That’s what this album is about for me.”
