Food Network’s Duff Goldman Recalls Being Confused with Man v. Food Star Adam Richman: ‘Different Jew’ (Exclusive)

Food Network star Duff Goldman gets recognized everywhere he goes — just not always as himself.

In a recent interview with PEOPLE, Goldman recounted a fun encounter he had in Guatemala where a local mistook him for fellow TV personality and foodie Adam Richman.

Goldman said he was “in the middle of nowhere” when someone approached him and asked him in Spanish if he was “a famous chef in America.” When Goldman confirmed, he said, the man pointed to another woman dining nearby who recognized the pastry chef.

“So I went to talk to her,” he said, noting that the man was with him to act as an interpreter for the woman, who spoke Kʼiche. “We’re talking through her and she says, ‘Oh, I’m watching you on TV. I saw you.’ She goes, ‘Man against food.’ ”

Man against food, of course, is Richman’s popular long-running Travel Channel series. Goldman is best known for his Food Network series, The sweet of all sweets.

Goldman said he found the confusion “funny” — and knew how to make the moment special for the woman. “I called Adam Richman and put him on speakerphone. I explained the whole scenario to him. This is happening right now. Then he started talking to the lady and she started looking confused. I was, like, ‘Man against food,'” he recounted. “Then she looked at me and I was like, ‘The sweet of all sweets‘. . . . Then she got it. She knew she had seen me somewhere, but I was like another Jew. Really funny.”

Food Network fans have watched Duff create hundreds of exquisite cakes at her Charm City Cakes bakery in Baltimore, Maryland, over 10 seasons The sweet of all sweets. The series ended in 2011, but Goldman continues to appear regularly on the network’s competition series, among other programs.

During his interview with PEOPLE, Goldman was candid about his new focus: his family. Goldman married his wife, Johnna, in 2019, and they have one child, Josephine, 2. His life, he said, looks different than he ever imagined.
