Former Disney Channel Star Bridgit Mendler Is Now Space Startup CEO: ‘Expect the Unexpected’

Bridgit Mendler has added a new role to her already impressive resume.

On Monday, the former Disney Channel star, 31, announced Xformerly known as Twitter, to serve as CEO of Northwood Space, a startup on a mission to create a “data highway between Earth and space.”

“We’re designing a shared ground infrastructure from first principles to expand access to space. There’s a lot of work ahead of us, but that’s the fun part,” he wrote Good luck Charlie alum in his announcement.

The company has already received $6.3 million in funding, according to Mendler’s tweet.

Mendler surprised fans revealing in the following tweet that she is the mother of a 4-year-old boy.

“The other news I wanted to share is that I am a mom to a sweet 4-year-old boy. Started fostering in 2021. adopted near Christmas 2022. So happy — being a parent is the greatest gift and most important experience there is. That’s my news for now, people,” her tweet read.

While this is the first time Mendler has spoken openly about becoming a mother, she told CNBC that she “totally fell in love with space law” while working at the Federal Communications Commission’s Space Office.

“Space is getting easier with so many different dimensions, but still the actual exercise of sending data in and out of space is difficult. You have difficulty finding an access point to contact your satellite,” she told CNBC.

Mendler worked with the agency in 2022 and studied at the University of Southern California, MIT and Harvard, according to her LinkedIn profile.

The multi-hyphenate said she developed the idea for the company after spending time with her family in New Hampshire during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“While everyone else was making their sourdough starters, we were building antennas out of random crap we could find at Home Depot… and receiving data from [National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration] satellite,” Mendler told CNBC.

According to the release, Mendler’s husband, Griffin Cleverly, whom she married in October 2019, will serve as the startup’s chief technology officer.

“It was magical,” she said Extra about their November 2019 wedding. “It was a great sunset, and there was even this guy who built a sandcastle behind us when we were getting married — in his shorts, he was building this beautiful, amazing sandcastle. While we’re working, he swears, I only saw him under the eye.”

In addition to acting, Mendler is also successful as a musician, having released her debut album Hello my name is… 2012 and EP 2016 Nemesis.
