ABC News Sam Purcell, head coach, and his wife, Meghan, have been happily married for more than two decades. Meghan is his support, providing strength and encouragement during their journey together. Sam Purcell is now the head coach of the Mississippi State women’s basketball program.
The 2023-24 season will be his second year as the head coach of the Mississippi State women’s basketball program. Prior to joining Mississippi State’s coaching staff, Purcell gained excellent experience at Louisville, where he worked for nine seasons under the lauded Jeff Walz. Purcell was instrumental in the team’s success during his tenure at Louisville, helping the Cardinals to an outstanding 266-48 overall record and eight NCAA Tournament appearances. His impact extended to four ACC regular season championships and a 2018 ACC Tournament victory, a noteworthy accomplishment for Louisville as it was the team’s first tournament victory since 1993.
Meet Sam Purcell’s wife, Meghan
Sam Purcell, an alumnus of Auburn University, has been happily married to Meghan for over 17 years. On August 5, 2006, the couple celebrated their union by exchanging wedding vows. Sam and Meghan are the happy parents of three daughters: Reese, Rylee and Reagan. Although little information is available about Meghan Purcell’s school and professional history, she maintains an active Facebook page. Meghan routinely shares moments from her family life, sharing photos of her husband and children, capturing the contentment and love that characterizes their family dynamic.
‘You live for these moments’
The Bulldogs defeated the reigning national champions, No. 9 LSU, 77-73, with strong play on both ends of the floor. The historic occasion took place in front of a packed Humphrey Coliseum, which hosted 9,121 Maroon and White devotees, marking the first home sellout during the Sam Purcell era. Reflecting on the overwhelming support, Purcell admitted his surprise upon arriving at the coliseum, noting,
“I looked up towards Grbina and saw a ready queue and I was stunned. I said, “This is what I’ve been dreaming of.”
Mississippi State did not disappoint their fans who showed them great dedication. The win marked the first time LSU has had back-to-back losses since the 2021-22 season, after losing to No. 1 South Carolina on Thursday. As a result, the Tigers’ record fell to 18-4 (5-3 SEC), while Mississippi State improved to 17-5 (4-3). Purcell summed up the importance of the occasion, saying, “This is everything you dream of. “You live for these moments.”
