Former Premier League manager Garry Monk was discharged as head of Cambridge United.

Monk, 45, leaves the club after less than a year, which saw him lead the side to just nine wins.

The owner of most Cambridge United Paul Barry said: “We would like to thank Garry for his hard work and dedication to Cambridge United in the last 12 months.

“He really went into the club during his stay with us and we are all very disappointed that he failed to succeed in the way we all hoped.

“In the end, the table does not lie and it is the right time to make a change as we conclude the first part of our football review.

“There are 15 games left this season and we have to continue to fight together to preserve our League 1 status over the coming weeks.

“At the same time, we will use this period for strategically planned for the next chapter of the football club. We will say more of the week.”

Cambridge is currently the Rock DNA League 1, sitting some eight points from security.
