News about Frank Lloyd Wright

“Every fixture and piece of furniture in both rooms is specially designed and made to order,” Publishers Weekly noted in 1908. All cabinets, tables, chairs, and wall details are made of cut wood.

A copy of the Louvre’s Winged Victory statue, a copper urn, and the tall, narrow “weed holders” Wright used to display meadow grasses can be seen in the photographs between the shelves. John Lloyd Wright, the second son of Frank Lloyd Wright, who created Lincoln Logs in 1916, claims that his father did not like the trinkets available at the time and created his own. “My father loved to grow weed!”

Browne hired Margaret Anderson to work as a bookseller in the bookstore after she moved to Chicago in the summer of 1908. After a few months, Browne encouraged her to help out at The Dial, next door, where “she was introduced to secret printers: composition (monotype and linotype), proofreading and make-up”.

Browne appointed her his “principal assistant”, but she left both posts in the summer of 1909 after Browne “was induced one day to kiss me”. The next day she offered many sincere and heartfelt apologies, but I was just as genuinely upset as he was. Browne was 65, Anderson 22, married with adult children, and she was a lesbian. These facts must be taken into account.

There is still a fine arts building at 410 South Michigan Avenue. The renovated Studebaker Theatre, Art Nouveau murals, a marble foyer, and a hidden Venetian court are just a few of the interiors that still largely resemble those of a century ago. However, there is no sign of Frank Lloyd Wright whether he uses Chicago’s last remaining human-operated crane or climbs to the seventh floor.

In 1910 Browne moved the bookstore to the first floor before closing it two years later. Around the same time, the Edificio de Bellas Artes completely renovated the original space. Between the ordinary plastered walls there is now an architecture and interior design studio. But even now, as you move through the rooms and up the stairs, you can still hear music on secret pianos and other instruments.
