Kuldip Nayar was born on August 14, 1923 in Sialkot, Punjab, British India (now Punjab, Pakistan). He moved to India on August 14, 1947, after the partition of India and Pakistan. He worked as a journalist for Urdu publishing houses, editor of English newspapers, and was elected High Commissioner to the United Kingdom. He died on August 23, 2018, after suffering from pneumonia (an infection that causes one or both of the air sacs in the lungs to become inflamed, which may fill with fluid), and had celebrated his 95th birthday earlier that month. He was born on August 14, 2018 in Sialkot, Punjab, British India (now in Punjab, Pakistan), to Babakshi Singh Nayar and Puran Devi Nayar. He is married to Bharti Sachar and has two sons: Rajiv Nayar, a senior Supreme Court advocate, and Sudhir Nayar.

Education and Careers
Kuldeep received his Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree from Foreman Christian College, Lahore, and then pursued his Bachelor of Laws degree. from Law College, Lahore. In 1952, he was admitted to the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University with a scholarship and received a degree in journalism. He started his career as a journalist for an Urdu publishing house and later became the editor of the English newspaper The Statesman. He was one of the few journalists detained when former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared a state of emergency in 1975.
In 1990, he was elected High Commissioner to the United Kingdom. A peace activist and human rights activist, he later became a member of India’s delegation to the United Nations. In August 1997, he was nominated to the Federal House of Parliament of India. He has also served as a press source for former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shashtri and veteran Congress leader and Union Home Minister Govind Ballabh Pant official.
