Fred Hechinger is an American actor and director, known for starring in the American films The Woman in the Window (2021), News of the World (2020), and Eighth Grade (2018).

Fred Hechinger was born on Thursday, December 2, 1999 (21 years old in 2020) in Manhattan, New York City. Growing up on the Upper West Side of New York City, Fred Hechinger was interested in storytelling from a young age. As a result, he even became a journalist during his teenage years. His career as an actor began after his Jewish Bar Mitzvah when a family friend invited him to participate in UCB’s improv show “ASSSSCAT”. Fred was so intrigued by improv that he sat on the floor of Chelsea’s Underground Theater the next night to watch the show. While sharing his experience in an interview, he said,
I was sitting on the side of the stage watching and I was like, “This is the coolest thing ever. I want to do what they’re doing.”
He then became an active member of the improvisational sketch comedy group UCB (Upright Citizens Brigade).

Fred was born into a Jewish family. He was named after his grandfather, Fred M. Hechinger, who was born in Germany and was a popular education editor for The New York Times and a former member of the newspaper’s editorial board.
His father’s name is Paul D. Hechinger, and he is the nephew of the famous film critic Leah Rozen.

In January 2018, Fred Hechinger starred in the theatre production Now We Are Men, which revolves around the close friendship of five high school boys. The play tells their unvarnished story about sex, power, consent, eroticism, masculinity, attracting girls or boys, while they also figure out what it means to be a man. In the play, Fred plays the role of Nick, a movie lover who is addicted to fetish porn.
Fred Hechinger made his screen debut as Trevor in the 2018 American comedy-drama film Eighth Grade, which depicted how technology is integrated into children’s lives.
Later, in the same year, he played Josh in the film Dr. Strangelove and Aidan in Vox Lux. In 2019, he played Jamie Manning in the American-Italian co-production drama Human Capital. In the film, Jamie Manning was drunk and didn’t know what was going on. He was hit by a jeep and a man on a bicycle died accidentally.
He is popular for his role as John Calley in the 2020 American Western drama film News of the World, in which he co-starred with renowned American actor Tom Hanks. The film tells the story of a Civil War veteran, Kyle Kidd, who discovers a little girl named Johanna was stolen by Native Americans as an infant, and he takes it upon himself to bring her to her surviving family. In the film, Hechinger plays a loner who is part of a militia group dedicated to clearing the county of outsiders. As the story unfolds, John forms a strong friendship with Kyle Kidd and helps him escape.
In addition to feature films, he has starred in the short films David (2020) and Let Them All Talk (2020). In 2021, he rose to fame with the American psychological thriller The Woman in the Window, in which he played the villain Ethan Russell, a teenage boy next door who becomes a budding serial killer.
