Authorities say Tokars hired a hit man to kill his wife over Thanksgiving vacation in 1992. Sara Tokars and her sons Ricky and Mike, then ages 6 and 4, were kidnapped by hit man Curtis Rower. In front of the boys, Veslač shot Sara Tokars in the head.
Curtis Rower was arrested for the murder. He identified Fred Tokars as the person who recruited him when he pleaded guilty.
Prosecutors said at Tokars’ trial that she discovered he was using his law firm to launder money for drug dealers, so she hired Rowars to kill Sara. According to the authorities, her husband killed her because she threatened to report him.
In 1994, Tokars was found guilty of extortion and sentenced to life in prison. He received a second life sentence after being convicted of Sara’s murder in 1997. Although he became a prison informant and testified against other inmates in an attempt to reduce his sentence, he was not eligible for parole.
According to Tokars’ lawyer, Jerry Froelich, Tokars had a neurological condition that completely destroyed his body. Froelich told the newspaper that the man had not walked for ten years and had a fever a few days before his death.
