Dairyland Primary School provided all the children. They were on their way to the pool at the Chowchilla Fairgrounds when a vehicle in front of them blocked traffic. The bus stopped when the driver saw three armed people in front of him. Frederick Woods, James and Richard Schoenfeld were those three.
One of the three put a gun to the driver’s head, while the other was driving the bus. They rode a bus 100 kilometers from Chowchilla to Livermore. The next day, July 16, the three kidnappers ordered the children and the driver down the ladder. The kidnappers had already loaded a vehicle with a small amount of food, water and bedding into the dugout. Later, the children and drivers successfully freed themselves from the excavation and escaped while the kidnappers slept. The kidnappers then demanded 5 million dollars. A short time later, the police arrested all three kidnappers.
