Friend Follows a group of young people living in New York City as they do their best to organize their personal, social, and professional lives, while dealing with all that adulthood throws at them. Among them is Phoebe, a self-taught masseuse and musician who is also the most eccentric of the bunch. Phoebe has a twin sister, Ursula, with whom she has no real relationship, and her family life is interesting but also very sad. For years, Phoebe believed her mother was Lily, when in fact she was one of her parents’ best friends.
Phoebe’s biological mother, also named Phoebe, is apparently her biological mother, like her daughter. The two began to develop a good relationship, and her mother was even there for her when she couldn’t decide whether to surrogate her brother Frank Jr. or not, but then she pretty much disappeared.

Phoebe Abbott is Lily and Frank Buffay’s best friend and Phoebe’s father. The three’s relationship led to Phoebe’s pregnancy. After giving birth to Phoebe and Ursula, she left Frank and Lily, and they raised their daughter together – until Frank left. Years later, Lily commits suicide, the girl’s stepfather is imprisoned and they live on the streets. Of course, Phoebe wanted to know more about her parents so she went to see Phoebe Abbott, who she thought was just a family friend. When she got there, she knew Phoebe was her biological mother (Ursula already knew this).
Phoebe Abbott was last seen when Phoebe was trying to decide whether to help his brother and wife, so Abbott was trying to show her how difficult it is to give up a child – but Phoebe still helps her brother. The two have remained in touch ever since and she was randomly mentioned twice, but she was never seen again, not even at Phoebe’s wedding. In episode 10 “The One With Phoebe’s Wedding”, at the rehearsal dinner, Phoebe said “I want to take a moment to mention my mother, she can’t be here‘ before being spurred on by Monica, though she might want to talk about Lily. Abbott’s absence is partly justified, since the wedding ended up in the street outside Central Park after a blizzard, and she probably won’t be able to make it there.
Behind the scenes, however, there may be another explanation. Phoebe Abbott, played by Teri Garr, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2002, which may have made it difficult for her to return to her other film and television commitments at the time. Friend Not paying much attention to the continuity of Phoebe’s story, completely forgetting about her biological mother. Despite that, Phoebe will definitely keep in touch with her, even if the episodes don’t mention her anymore.
