From Pamela Anderson-Inspired Updos to '90s Waves, Celeb Stylist Mia Santiago Shares Fall Bridal Hair Trends

Summer wedding season may be in full swing, but celebrity stylist Mia Santiago is already getting inspiration for fall.

Santiago — whose celebrity clients include Mariska Hargitay, Brittany Snow, Colin Farrell, Dove Cameron, Hugh Jackman and John Legend — tells PEOPLE that fall’s biggest wedding hair trends will range from sexy, Pamela Anderson-inspired updos and intricate buns to ’90s style “glam waves” them.

To achieve this look, Santiago has some expert advice. She says extensions can help lift any style, including updos.

“I love using Pamela Anderson’s Hidden Crown Flip Up Clip Extensions for tousled hair. It’s perfect for adding length to create texture on top of the head,” she notes.

For brides opting for a long, textured ponytail, she recommends the Hidden Crown Hair Bungee Ponytail for added length and volume.

Her tip for creating sleek, textured buns is to spray a flat toothbrush or spoolie with hairspray and lightly seal in any bumps for a flawless finish.

Braids are another popular choice for weddings, and Santiago suggests one step you can’t miss before finishing the hairspray to keep the braids intact.

“Sometimes braids can be out of whack. Before you set the braids with hairspray, step back and look at the full finished look to check for balance,” advises the hairstylist, who is currently opening her own luxury hair and scalp spa in Columbus, Ohio, and shares space with celebrity hair colorist Nikki Ferrara in New York.

For those brides going with waves on their big day, Santiago recommends, “For a modern fall touch, smooth the bangs area down and tuck behind the ears — to keep this look super swept back — and secure behind the ears with a tiny elastic.”

Santiago’s other top tips for the bride include using your wedding dress as inspiration when deciding on a hair look. “Find your dress first,” she says.

Another important factor to consider is time. “If it’s 90 degrees and you’re getting married on the beach, opt for an updo or a chic ponytail. Reduce frizz and the urge to keep touching your hair,” she says.

Santiago tells PEOPLE that the biggest mistake brides make is trying to look like someone they’re not and choosing styles that aren’t timeless.

“You want to bring out your natural beauty on your wedding day—not look like a completely different person,” she explains. “I always suggest to brides to amp up their glam, but don’t overdo it. You’ll have these images forever. Be mindful of the styles you choose.

She adds that it’s important to do your research and book a trial before going to the hair or make-up artist. “Don’t sign the contract until the trial is over,” she urges. “I see many brides sign contracts before they know if the stylist can achieve their dream hair goals.”

Santiago also suggests asking around for referrals. “Word of mouth. Your amazing hairstylist might not do wedding hair, but they’ll know someone great who does,” she explains. “Then look them up on social media or Google, read reviews and see their work.”
