Fury erupts as travellers dig up ENTIRE hillside to move caravans in – leaving neighbours fearing devastating landslip

RESIDENTS are furious after travelers dug up an entire hill to move their caravans without any planning permission.

Locals fear a landslide after tonnes of earth were dug up from a hillside in Nantyglo, Gwent, with seemingly no safety measures in place.

The traveling group recently purchased the land, but did not apply for any planning permission for the site.

The owners have since been served with a second High Court injunction after the first interim legal order halted the work.

They have been ordered to stop any further construction without planning permission and can no longer bring caravans to the site.

Blaenau Gwent Council said: “The development of the land took place without planning permission.”

In the prohibition received by the Council, it is stated that the landowners may not:

  • Carry out or cause to be carried out any engineering or development works on the land without prior planning permission, including by way of erecting any building or other structure or by way of material change of use.
  • Bring onto the Land any travel caravan, mobile home or any other movable structure other than the six travel caravans stationed on the land on the date of this temporary ban.

A spokesperson for Blaenau Gwent Council added: “The High Court interim injunction also states that no person other than the owner of the land shall occupy or occupy (including overnight) any of the travel caravans permitted to be kept on the land.

The ban states that landowners must “cease to inhabit, live and/or sleep or cause or permit any person to inhabit, live and/or sleep in a caravan, mobile home or any other movable structure on the land”.

The order will remain in effect until a full court hearing.

A fundraising page allegedly started by one of the passengers said the work is being done because “the council is not providing us with the right needs”.

They added: “We are arranging our own property to which we are entitled.”

Yvonne Bell, 55, who started the petition, said: “I informed the council this was happening last week and I was concerned it would happen over the Easter weekend while the offices were closed.

“We have been in contact with a number of different departments and people as we sincerely believe that this work has commenced without the proper planning permission.

“We know this because the council told us it is not safe.

“Some of the older residents here are horrified by what’s going on – they don’t even feel able to open the curtains at the moment.

“It’s just not fair to any of us – we refuse to live in fear.”

Anna, another local, said she was threatened because of her views on work.

“There were no safety measures in place and a lot of soil supporting the very busy road above was washed away,” she added.

“It’s a very scary time for residents and comments are circulating on social media about hoping homes are well insured.”

More than 600 people have already signed a petition against the work being carried out on land near Porters Road and Banna Bungalows in the town.

Pictures show that a large area of the hill has been flattened and about six caravans and an excavator have moved to the site.

Land registry documents show that there is a land contract according to which the land can only be used for grazing.

It comes after locals blasted the historic horse fair as “unnecessary” and “disgraceful” after streets were left littered with rubbish.

And hundreds of angry protesters clashed with commuters after they gathered in a local park and refused to move.
