In 1991, G. Sampath Kumar was selected as the Tamil Nadu Police and was appointed as Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP or Dy. SP). In 2004, he was double promoted and appointed as Additional Superintendent of Police and later as Superintendent of Police.
On March 13, 2012, he was promoted to the rank of IPS (Indian Police Service) officer; however, he was included in the selection list for 2009 and the year of allotment to the Tamil Nadu cadre was revised from 2003 to 2004. He also received training from the National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM) from 2009 to 2015 while serving as a Motor Vehicle Inspector in the Traffic Directorate of Tamil Nadu Police. In 2013, he was posted as Superintendent of Police, Q Division, Tamil Nadu Police. Tamil Nadu CID. He was suspended in February 2014 and resumed as Commander, 3rd Battalion, Tamil Nadu Special Police, Veerapuram, in March 2018. On June 30, 2017, he became the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) for Welfare. He was promoted to the post of Inspector General of Police (IG) Welfare on June 2, 2021. In 2023, he retired from the Indian Police Service.

In May 2013, G. Sampath Kumar was appointed as Inspector General of Police, CID (Internal Security), Branch Q, while the fake passport case was being investigated. He uncovered a network of bookmakers allegedly engaged in match-fixing in the Indian Premier League (IPL). G. Sampath Kumar alleged that several businessmen and players were involved in rigging and betting, including Kitty aka Utham Jain, Hotelier Vikram Agarwal, owner of Hotel Raddison Blu, his wife Vandana Agarwal, Gurunath Meiyappan and his wife Rupa, MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina. G. Sampath Kumar was later suspended in 2014 after it was alleged that he had accepted a bribe of around Rs 60 lakh from a financier named Mahendra Singh Ranka.
He also claimed that Dhoni, the former India World Cup-winning captain, was involved in spot-fixing and held several other positions that conflicted with his position as India captain. In 2014, Dhoni filed a contempt case against G. Sampath Kumar and issued a statement against the Supreme Court of India and the Madras High Court. In 2018, the Tamil Nadu home department revoked Kumar’s suspension. On December 15, 2023, G. Sampath Kumar was sentenced to 15 days in jail in a case filed by MS Dhoni.
