Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade Support Daughter Zaya at Out100 Event as Trans Teen Is Honored as a Groundbreaker

Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union make sure they’re always in Zaya Wade’s corner.

The former NBA pro, 42, performed at the Out100 2024 event — which honors the most powerful and influential LGBTQ+ influencers — alongside the 17-year-old and his wife.

The trio, who appeared in high spirits, posed next to each other on the red carpet. Zaya wore a sleek black Lena Jacket Dress courtesy of Ronny Kobo with leopard fur and Mary Jane heels. Her hair was styled straight and she wore minimal jewelry, only wearing a gold ring on her finger.

Dwyane also wore a white sweater tucked under a dark denim jacket with dark pants, while Union wore a green and brown gingham dress accessorized with a white clutch.

Zaya, who came out as transgender in 2020, has been a vocal advocate for queer rights for several years and was honored at the event as one of this year’s trailblazers. She was honored to be with her Wicked star Cynthia Erivo, who was named the 2024 Out100 Icon of the Year, and Sheryl Lee Ralph.

Dwyane, along with Union, became a staunch ally of the LGBTQ+ community and tried to serve as a role model for other parents. He even teamed up with his daughter to work on Translatable, a digital platform that provides a safe space for LGBTQ+ youth to express themselves by submitting content.

His work advocating for the transgender community earned him the Elevate Prize Catalyst Award in May. During his acceptance speech, Dwyane noted that he was “just a parent doing what a good parent should do.”

“This is just part of the Wade family, all the things we do…” he said at the time. “We believe that you have to be accepted in this space to make the world a better place.”

“She wasn’t looking for this extra thrill in life,” Wade said of Zaya. “She just wanted to be a kid and do kid things and live her life and be selfish and take care of herself. That’s what you should do at her age, take care of yourself. But she thinks about the wider community, so I’m damn proud of her as a father.”

“You hope as a parent that your children feel comfortable communicating with you when they are confused and looking for answers,” he continued. “Whatever they’re experiencing, they feel comfortable enough to express it to you. You won’t want it to be someone else. At the end of the day, they are your children. But you have to create an environment for that.”

Dwyane also paid tribute to Zaya as she celebrated her 17th birthday in May on his Instagram, sharing cute photos with the teenager and some solo photos of Zaya. “Seventeen🎉 @zayawade,” he simply captioned his post.
