The actor explained that he felt the seeds of Daenerys burning King’s Landing were planted throughout the series, and once it happened, her character transformation made sense. However, he admitted that the show should have had more episodes to flesh out the event, and compared subsequent episodes to the work of director Michael Bay.
He also warned Dragon House May slowly rolls out the dragon-themed action set, warning that Daenerys’ destruction may be the reason the finale was so polarizing. Even so, he thought the finale’s footage was incredible, likening a shot of Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) walking through a crowd of dead bodies to a Renaissance painting. It’s not perfect, it’s not. But remember, I’m not a screenwriter, and neither are 99.99% of people. Some people think they are, but I know I’m not, so I have this. So [the response] It really disappoints me. Obviously I don’t feel responsible for it because I would have died a long time ago. But it disappoints me because the show has been so highly regarded and I don’t think it deserves it. I don’t think there’s a way they can end it that satisfies the audience. I believe there’s never been a show in the history of television – maybe Breaking Bad – that people have been so invested in, and I think everyone has their ultimate fantasy of how Daenerys ends up, and any deviation from that, especially such an extreme deviation, is going to annoy them.
Even though people say Daenerys acted out of character and moved too fast, I don’t understand why they didn’t figure that out throughout the show. I kept waiting for it to happen. The signs were there. She actually said at one point that she would burn down King’s Landing once Drogon got big enough. And the result? She did exactly what she said she would. My only criticism, and it’s not really a criticism because I understand the budget issues and stuff, but I just wish it was longer.
I don’t think those longer episodes work as well. I think more episodes would be better. Michael Bay style, that’s how I interpret it. Last season, Michael Bay style was spiced up a little bit, like explosions and lots of dragons. They give us a few of those episodes and we crave them, and then all of a sudden they say “Here’s your dinner, maybe it’s not as appetizing as you thought.” Sometimes the idea of dinner is better than dinner.
They’re doing something similar right now with House of the Dragon. Everybody’s waiting for the dragon battle, and I try to remind everybody. Obviously, I understand the Game of Thrones series, you might have waited 20 years for it, but maybe it’ll come out in the next season, who knows? But I’m not setting my watch. I mean I’m not setting an alarm for it. I just hope people are more satisfied with it because I really enjoyed it. Peter’s scene [Dinklage] Walking through the ruins, people say, “Oh my god, I really hope Cersei dies horribly.” What about their deaths? It’s like a Renaissance painting. It’s art. There’s all this beautiful work and music and stuff, and people say, “That’s too bad.” What are you talking about?

Nairn’s sentiments reflect that some people do like the direction of the last few episodes, praising game of Thrones However, he criticized the show for slowing down its pace to better explain Daenerys’ villainy, which reflects the mixed reception from viewers and critics as the final episodes aired. As of this writing, Season 8, Episode 5, “The Bells,” has a 49% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while the series’ final episode, “The Iron Throne,” has a 47%.
Although the show’s final episodes were panned by viewers and critics, the eighth season was praised for its high production values and for providing definitive conclusions to the characters’ stories. Although Nairn game of Thronesit’s clear that the show needs more development to make the storyline sound and make sense of the direction it’s going. Even so, there are redeeming qualities to the story, such as its many twists, which might have felt worthwhile if given a little more time to develop. This makes the cast’s stance on the last few episodes more understandable, and they’ve simply messed up because they didn’t take the time to make sure the plot was moving smoothly.
