The Beeb will not normally allow any advertising in its programming, but exceptions can be made if there is editorial justification and the product is considered relevant enough to tell the story.
During the finale, Gavin and Smithy ran into Nessa and Stacey on their way home from their stag and hen nights and they all headed to KFC.
Gavin asked Nessa and Smithy if they wanted to share a cob of corn – which fans will remember was a moment from series two.
The pair famously bonded after seductively tucking into KFC corn on the cob.

One person wrote on Reddit: “I thought the BBC didn’t allow product placement and promotions, but there were a few heavily promoted shops/products in the final. Or so it seemed to me. Did anyone else think the same or was I just focusing on the wrong things?!”
Someone replied: “I thought the same thing. John Lewis/Strava/Samsung was obvious!”
Others discussed it on Xu, with a viewer commenting, “Worst product placement I’ve ever seen.”
Another added: “There seems to be a lot of product placement.”
Other moments featuring products included Smithy asking for a Red Bull and Uncle Bryn discussing the brand of his phone.

This included Sonia (Laura Aikman) – Smithy’s girlfriend from the Christmas 2019 episode, which ended in disaster when Nessa proposed to him – returning as a bride-to-be.
In the last episode, many guests stood up when asked if anyone was against the marriage, and Smithy realized he had to confess his true love to Nessa, who the finale revealed had her proposal broken in 2019 before Smithy could give his answer. and the couple never discussed it again.
After rushing off to meet Nessa before going back to work on the ships, Smithy proposed to her, and the final scene featured a touching montage of a low-key wedding, with her in a black dress and the couple finally happily ever after.
The series originally aired between 2007 and 2010, and told the long-distance love story of title characters Stacey Shipman (Joanna Page) and Gavin (Mathew Horne).
It returned in 2019 with a special episode that at the time held the record for the highest Christmas ratings since 2008.
The 2019 Christmas episode had an overnight audience of 11.6 million.
The Sun contacted the BBC about product placement.

Gavin and Stacey’s best moments
With the news that the show is gearing up for an exciting return to screens, let’s take a look at some of the biggest and best moments of the comedy show…
- Smithy and Rudi’s American Boy rap – No one will ever forget when James Corden and Sheridan Smith perfectly rapped Kanye West and Estelle’s hit American Boy word for word while walking across the parking lot on the phone to Gavin.
- Pam’s Vegetarian Fail – Despite her love of cheeseburgers, Pam finds herself caught in a web of unexpected lies when she claims to be a vegetarian. She is forced to keep the secret throughout the show and uses husband Mick to help her make fun of the meat. She is later shaken when Stacey catches her in the act mocking a ham in the kitchen. Stacey tells her, “Is that ham, Pam!?… “I saw you, Pam. A scotch egg here, a bit of bacon there, I put those regular sausages in the Linda McCartney box”.
- THAT fishing trip – It remains one of the biggest mysteries in Gavin and Stacey history what exactly happened on the ill-fated fishing trip. Bryn seems to be hiding a secret about an incident between him and his nephew Jason that left a fractured relationship. Nessa’s boyfriend, Dave, is the only other person who knows the whole truth. Bryn seemed to be referring to him and Jason lying naked together to keep warm as he told Dave, “We’re going to get this out, once and for all, man to man, you may know what happened David, but you don’t know why it happened! It was freezing cold, it was! And when you’re that cold…”
- Islands in the Stream – No one can ever forget the classic karaoke performance of Islands in the Stream. Nessa and Bryn performed the song in front of all their loved ones. The whole pub was seen to start dancing as they enjoyed their drunkenness.
- Christmas Special – 2019 fans were overjoyed when the series returned, but it ended on a high note. Nessa asked Smithy if she would marry him because she finally came clean about her feelings for him. Fans were disappointed as the show then went straight to the exit credits as they never found out how Smithy responded. Will all be revealed in the new episode?
