Gayatri started playing in women’s singles and doubles categories in various badminton tournaments at a very young age. When she was around 15 years old, she became India’s number one. Ranked 1st in the “Under 17 age group”. Subsequently, she participated in badminton competitions at the Asian Games in Jakarta (2018) and the South Asian Games in Nepal (2019). At her father’s badminton academy ‘Pulela Gopichand Badminton Academy’ in Hyderabad, her coach Arun Vishnu paired her with Teresa Jolly (a badminton player) in the women’s doubles. The duo performed in many national and international competitions. The pair was successful and they won several women’s doubles medals for India.

Accused of nepotism
In the early years of her career, she competed in women’s doubles with Indian badminton player Vaishnavi. In 2018, Vaishnavi’s parents accused Gayatri and her father of nepotism and said that Pulela chose his daughter over Vaishnavi only because of Vaishnavi’s ability to defeat Gayatri. Several other badminton players later accused Prela of favoritism.
