Murmu is a trusted aide of Narendra Modi. While serving as chief minister of Gujarat, he advised Modi on many legal matters. In 2014, Modi was elected Prime Minister of India and appointed Murmu as Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Finance. On March 1, 2019, Murmu was appointed as India’s Expenditure Minister. In May 2019, he joined Nirmala Sitharaman’s team to handle the 2019 Union Budget.
On October 25, 2019, he was nominated by the President of India as the first Lieutenant Governor of the newly established Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. On October 31, 2019, Murmu was sworn in as the first Lieutenant Governor of Johnson & Johnson. He was sworn in on the same day as RK Mathur, the first Governor of Ladakh.
On August 5, 2020, he resigned as the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir and was succeeded by Manoj Sinha, former Minister of State for Transport and Minister of State for Railways. On August 6, 2020, Mr. Murmu was appointed as Comptroller and Auditor General (C&AG) of India; he succeeds Rajiv Mehrishi as C&AG.
