Gemma Chan Shares the Secret to Her Minimalist Style — and What’s Behind Her ‘Kick Ass’ New Project

Whether running errands or walking the red carpet, Gemma Chan always looks perfectly polished.

Now, the 40-year-old actress tells PEOPLE that she can thank the fashion legend for her timeless look.

“I’m trying to follow the maxim of the late, great lady Vivienne Westwood: ‘Buy less, choose well, make it last,'” says Chan, who adds that she’s “on the hunt” for knee-high boots this winter.

The actress — who won over fans with her role as Astrid Leong in the Crazy rich Asians — takes on a new role at the later this month Diablo IV – Season of Blood as the vampire hunter Erys.

“I think there’s something about the heightened world of dark fantasy combined with very real emotions that makes it compelling,” she says of the “legendary” game (Season of blood will be available on October 17). “My character, Erys, is an experienced vampire hunter who is the player’s guide during the Season of Blood. What’s not to like about playing a vampire hunter?”

While Chan has previously voiced characters in animated films, this was her first time participating in a video game.

Still, “this was no different experience,” she says. “I got a pretty detailed description of the character and I looked at the concept art of the character. Then it was a case of imagining what the character had been through, the fact that she’s suffered a lot of loss and seen a lot of horror in her life which made her a bit jaded.”

As for what characters she might get into this Halloween? “We’ll see,” she teases. “I took last year off and had too much fun grooming the cat.”
