MiHoYo, the publisher behind the popular RPG Genshin Impact, a long-standing debate began over which Traveler was the canon protagonist who should have rested, simply by confirming that it was any of them. The developer has responded to player inquiries as to whether the male Aether or the female Lumine is the true protagonist of the story, confirming that the decision is left entirely to the player and which twin they choose.
Genshin Impact The story begins with the player choosing which of a pair of twins (male or female) will be the protagonist. The other twin was then mysteriously taken away by the mysterious God of the Unknown, which set the stage for the chosen twin, later known as the Traveler, to continue the main quest across the world of Teyvat. While the twin the player chooses has no impact on the story, because the male twin Aether usually appears in game trailers, he is considered to be the game’s canon protagonist rather than his sister Lumine.
A Reddit user named CapGlace saw a Twitter user’s screenshot and wanted to clarify once and for all which of the twins is Genshin Impact’s canon protagonist. While the message sent to MiHoYo isn’t clear from the screenshots, it’s reasonable to surmise from the responses that players cited Aether’s prominence in all promotional materials for the game as the reason why the debate over which twin is canon continues. MiHoYo’s response more specifically clarified that there is no “classic” Traveler, regardless of which one is used more in the promo. In other words, the protagonist’s setting is entirely determined by the player and which twin they choose at the beginning of the game and continue until the end.
The debate over which twin is the true protagonist mirrors a similar debate over which version of the original Mass Effect Commander Shepard from the trilogy, both male and female, is considered canon.as Genshin Impact Influence, trailers, and official merchandise often feature a male Shepard, leading some players to assert that only he is canon, even though the player’s chosen gender does not affect the storyline at all, aside from the choice of a potential love interest.Furthermore, it is related to Genshin Impact The argument is that the choice of female protagonists is underutilized in the respective games’ promotional materials; if both men and women were given equal attention, this controversy might well have been avoided entirely.
Giving players greater control over their main character, including their gender, will continue to be a feature of the game, but male iterations will still be front and center in trailers, posters, and other promotional pieces. Hopefully, as time goes on and awareness of these issues grows, developers will realize that their female protagonists deserve as much screen time as their male counterparts.
