George Clooney Praises Joe Biden's 'Selfless' Decision to Drop Out of the Presidential Race: 'He Gets All the Credit'

George Clooney hails Joe Biden’s historic decision to drop out of the 2024 presidential race as “the most selfless thing anyone has done since George Washington.”

His comments were made at the 2024 Venice Film Festival on Sunday, September 1, where he is promoting Wolveshis new film, starring Brad Pitt, comes months after he publicly called on Biden to step down in an impassioned essay for The New York Times titled “I love Joe Biden, but we need a new candidate.”

Front Wolvesworld premiere at the festival, Clooney, 63, was asked at a press conference to talk about the “impact” his essay had on Biden’s decision to pave the way for Kamala Harris, who is now running as the Democratic nominee.

“The person who should be applauded is the president who did the most selfless thing anyone has done since George Washington,” Clooney said in the press room as Pitt, 60, sat next to him.

“All the machinations that got us there, none of it will be remembered, and it shouldn’t be,” he continued. “What should be remembered is the selfless act of someone who did the hardest thing. You know we’ve seen it around the world, and for someone who says, ‘I think there’s a better way forward,’ he gets all the credit, and it’s actually true.”

In his essay for NYTClooney publicly withdrew his support for Biden’s 2024 presidential campaign, urging the White House to consider the impact of keeping him on the ballot.

In the article, Clooney called himself a “lifelong Democrat,” reminding readers that he co-hosted a Biden campaign fundraiser in Hollywood, which he noted was “the largest single fundraiser ever in support of any Democratic candidate.”

“It’s devastating to say this, but the Joe Biden I was with three weeks ago at a fundraiser was not the Joe ‘big F—ing deal’ Biden of 2010. He wasn’t even the Joe Biden of 2020.” Clooney said: “He was is the same man we all witnessed at the debate.”

Clooney expressed his personal affection for the current president, writing: “I love Joe Biden. As a senator. As vice president and as president. I consider him a friend and I believe in him. Believe in his character. Believe in his morals. In the last four years he has received many the battles he faced.”

However, the two-time Oscar winner said “the only battle he can’t win is against time”, referring to the 81-year-old’s age.

Clooney concluded the essay by thanking the president — and with a plea: “Joe Biden is a hero; he saved democracy in 2020. We need him to do it again in 2024.”

Pitt and Clooney famously starred in the Ocean’s trilogy, with Burn after readingbefore reuniting for their new film.

A source told PEOPLE in February that the actors are thrilled to be working together again on screen.

“Brad and George have been friends forever,” the source said. “They love and respect each other no matter how many years it was between their concerts. It was a long time ago and they were happy to work together on this film.”

Wolves was a meaty project and both were really interested in it,” the source added. “They’re excited about the movie and they’re enjoying the hell out of it as the time comes to release.”

Wolves is in theaters on September 20th and will be available to stream on Apple TV+ on September 27th.
